I think I may have burnt myself out with programming in the last 3 days

#

Luckily I have until monday

tired osprey
#

Is programming until 4 am then sleeping 6 hours and doing the same thing again for three days during holidays a bad thing to do to your body and health if you want to get someting done?

rain spindle
#

@tired osprey your German it's perfectly acceptable

tired osprey
#

As I speak german as a native language that is very likely yes

rain spindle
#

I'd be more worried if you retired at 60 and had a massive pension. means you might be contracting the Greek economy

vestal briar
#

CS is getting intresting in school now, doing basics of SQL Injection

rain spindle
#

SQL injection I just silly

#

you need the 2nd order SQL injection shit

vestal briar
#

Just basics of SQL and injection is good

#

Knew what was happening in lesson beforehand due to some tom scott videos

tired osprey
#

WOW

#

wikipedia fucking shut down because of article 13

dusky orchid
#

Wut

tired osprey
#

well in a prtest

#

if i get to a german wiki page i get a note that they shut down for today as a protest against article 13 and friends

dusky orchid
#

Only EU wikis?

tired osprey
#

idk

#

#

can you see shit here?

dusky orchid
#

Yep

tired osprey
#

so it might only be the german one

#

dusky orchid
#

No wait, it was just slow to load

tired osprey
#

en.wikipedia works

vestal briar
#

Huh

dusky orchid

But yeah it didn't go to en

#

I clicked your link specifically

tired osprey

#

dusky orchid
#

Each regional subdomain is managed by their own committee iirc

tired osprey
#

ARE YOU KIDDING ME GERMAN WIKIPEDIA

dusky orchid
#

So this is probs just the de committee decision

#

Have fun with that

tired osprey
#

i mean the protests against article 13 are by far the most in germany but still

worn kite
#

you know what to do on Saturday now

tired osprey
#

i knew that before

#

all those pupils who want to do stuff on wikipedia tomorrow

dusky orchid
#

Seems like a bad idea. The article I mean.

tired osprey
#

hah

#

thats gonna be fun

#

oh it is it is

dusky orchid
#

Can't hate them for protesting in a peaceful manner I guess

tired osprey
#

lots of people will

sand goblet
#

But it is the case that most people don't understand article 13 or what it does and doesn't cover

#

It is too broad but the idiots going on about memes being illegal clearly don't give enough of a shit to actually understand what's going on :P

tired osprey
#

fun fact they even say in that message that they arent part of article 13s scope

#

so they are actually not protesting for themselves but for the "free information"

vestal briar
#

Will article 13 be included in britan with breixt?

#

Or will it be too far on

sand goblet
#

Of course it will, they still want to do business in Europe

Anyone wanna help me find a KVM switch? I have a keyboard + mouse on USB 2.0 and a monitor that plugs in via HDMI. Needs to split into a desktop with appropriate inputs , but my laptop only has USB-C ports and 2x mini displayports

viral parrot
#

do you need a hardware kvm?

#

thinking about synergy

#

for your laptop you should convert usbc to usb and mini DP to hdmi maybe?

steel fox
#

gov't laptop so has to be hardware based KVM ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

viral parrot
#

I have used that kind of a dongle for kvms in the past

steel fox
#

as much as I wanna use synergy I'm not sure its okay to use

tame terrace
#

?

#

why wouldn't it be "okay" ?

viral parrot
#

minidp -> hdmi -> kvm should be no problem as long as it is a hdmi kvm

#

might be business related rules

#

i cannot install synergy on my main server

#

so i use RDP and kvm for physical on site work

tame terrace
#

synergy kinda sucks anyway

#

mwb is better if it's between two windows machines

#

more reliable.

steel fox
#

Because the government is kinda picky about what software can/can't be used on machines that store classified information

viral parrot
#

yes

steel fox

Oh lit thats perfect

im about to have dongle city going on, on my desk but ill be free of my touchpad

ive been having trouble sleeping a lot lately and recently its gotten worse as im sleeping even shorter hours

what do i do in the meantime

tired osprey

usually ill learn python until i get tired and fall asleep but lack of sleep has made it harder to do

if everything in my program is going to be in memory, and i dont use enough memory to require swap space, using an hdd over an ssd on my server should have no performance impact right?

tired osprey
#

well that depends on what your program does in the background if you for example got an application running which you access which writes and reads from the hard drive it might, also the fact that your program doesnt consume enough does not mean other programs on the server dont consume enough to force your program into swap

sullen thorn

drowsy flax
#

๐Ÿ˜›

vestal briar
#

Make a new os in machine code whilst creating a custom CPU

sand goblet

I wouldn't think so actually

#

Arch isn't hard to install, you just need to be able to read

what it is , is time-consuming for a beginner

vestal briar
#

Read as in become immortal to finish reading

#

My mother couldnt use arch

#

Therefore not beginner friendly

vapid bluff
sand goblet
#

Your mother probably couldn't use any linux distro

stark prawn
#

The average user wants their stuff to just work upon installing ๐Ÿ˜›

sand goblet
#

same as mine

#

:P

#

well, the thing is, arch does provide that

vestal briar
#

Ubuntu and Xubuntu are suprisingly easy to get used to

drowsy flax
#

xD

sand goblet
#

you just have to get through initial setup

vestal briar
#

She uses cross platform stuff anyway

sand goblet
#

which is why manjaro and antergos exist really

vestal briar
#

Thunderbird, libre, firefox

stark prawn
#

Arch requires you to get a lot of things seperatly after installing

#

Don't use antergos btw, I've had that break on updates a few times.

vestal briar
#

Arch basically allows you to customise an entire pc

sand goblet
#

I know a lot of people that use antergos without issue

vestal briar
#

Make it exacly for you

#

Your perfect OS

sand goblet
#

That's not entirely true

#

It allows you to do that at the package level

#

But not at the kernel level

vestal briar
#

Not entirely

sand goblet
#

Gentoo does it at the kernel level

#

if that's your thing

drowsy flax
#

i need to go guys work work work

stark prawn
#

No too long ago the nvidia drivers wanted kernel 5.0, but Other packages held the kernel upgrade back.

vestal briar
#

Most people won't be using the kernal day to day

drowsy flax
#

SEE YOU LATER

vestal briar

Ok the

stark prawn

vestal briar
#

sand goblet
#

Oh, nice

stark prawn
#

So I did what any great linux user would do.

sand goblet
#

installed manjaro?

stark prawn
#

I waited for a day untill my filesysystem drivers were compatible with 5.0

#

and then upgraded from another tty

sand goblet
#

upgrading from another TTY is actually super important if you use gnome

#

which is, well, a problem if you're on vanilla ubuntu

tired osprey
#

uprading drivers for gpus?

#

or just nvidia

sand goblet
#

If you're updating packages within gnome and gdm has an update, gnome will crash and you'll be left with a broken upgrade

tired osprey
#

never happened to me

sand goblet
#

happened to me numerous times

tired osprey
#

๐Ÿ‘

stark prawn
#

This was the nvidia driver in antergos repos, I got a version magic error that it wanted kernel 5.0 while I was still on 4.20

sand goblet
#

I was using an X session with the proprietary nvidia drivers, which might have had something to do with it

#

either way, it's not good

#

the systemd and gnome team both say you need to do upgrades in another tty

#

ubuntu solves this by never upgrading systemd in a normal package update

#

which is pretty amusing

#

you need to do a dist-upgrade or explicitly upgrade the held back packages

tired osprey
#

i think fedora prevents it with never upgrading gnome with the exception being between releases

#

but it does do systemd all the time

sand goblet
#

systemd upgrades have actually never taken my system down

stark prawn
#

Systemd PPA dabward

tired osprey
#

same here

#

not that ppa thing

sand goblet
#

PPAs are a bit of a joke

#

well, really, launchpad is a bit of a joke

stark prawn
#

Not sure if it exists, wouldn't use it.

tired osprey
#

what i have been wondering for some time

#

why is there no PPA with python 3.6 and 7 for pis

stark prawn
#

Copying PPA commands is often the easiest method for getting updated programs.

tired osprey
#

like people always compile those by hand on pis

stark prawn
#

Because a lot of it is for some reason outdated

sand goblet
#

copying PPA commands is often the easiest method for getting stuck in dependency hell, though

#

which is my big complaint about debian in general

stark prawn
#

It's frustrating to encounter a bug, then see that the issue was closed 1.5 years ago, but the ubuntu repo's have an older version

sand goblet
#

the problem occurs when a PPA has an updated version of some package dependency

tired osprey
#

under fedora youll find almost anything you want inside either the default repos, rpmfusion or flatpak

sand goblet
#

which happens more often than you'd think

tired osprey
#

ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

sand goblet
#

so you install a package from a PPA and it pulls in the updated version of the dep

#

then you go to do a package upgrade and you find that a bunch of packages won't install because they can't resolve the version they want

stark prawn
#

Fedora's rolling release version is supposedly decently up to date.

tired osprey
#

i use normal releases though

#

however i got tons of rawhide chroots for package development i should probably clean up some day

sand goblet
#

debian tries to do the whole versioned packages thing but it's honestly probably the worst system for it

#

the best? gentoo

stark prawn
#

Second only to pen and paper

sand goblet
#

because gentoo is able to handle having multiple versions of any one package installed at the same time

#

I haven't seen another distro that can do that

tired osprey
#

i had one issue with packages on fedora where yum which was depreceated a version ago but not uninstalled during the upgrade still wanted to keep a few files which the new dnf upgrade wanted to change

#

but apart from that it always just works โ„ข for me

sand goblet
#

fedora more or less works

#

but fedora is rpm-based, so

#

no debian there

#

it does suffer from some of the same problems, but rpm maintainers tend to be a lot more professional

tired osprey
#

there were some dicussion on dpkg in fedora in the dev mailing list

#

so i tend to be a lot more professional aha

sand goblet
#

I mean you've gotta remember

#

ubuntu is touted as the beginner linux distro

#

it has a huge community of people that, basically, don't know what they're doing

tired osprey
#

yeah true

#

one of the bigger debian devs recently left debian because the infrastructure is too old and package dev in general sucks

sand goblet
#

the funny thing about arch

tired osprey
#

so thats saying something

sand goblet
#

despite it being fairly user-unfriendly to install

#

the package management is probably some of the friendliest out there

#

you generally don't have to worry about package versioning because all you have is the latest

tired osprey
#

yeah but sometimes something does not want the latest

tulip palm
#

i do like pacman a lot

sand goblet
#

there's no concept of distribution releases either, so there's no breaking your install because dist-upgrade doesn't work

tired osprey
#

the only thing ive found to be fucking awful when doing packaging for fedora is rust

#

because rust packages all pin their versions and if you package a gui application youd have to bundle 10 different versions at a time basically because all the sub deps rely on other versions

#

and there is only one fedora version at a time

sand goblet
#

and interestingly, appimage integrates nicely on arch with the right packages

#

I literally only use it for one thing

#

p3x onenote

tired osprey
#

like for example lazy_static is so damn widespread and basically everyone uses a different version

sand goblet
#

but I have an easy double-click install, and I can right-click it in my application menu to uninstall it

#

like, there's an option in the right-click menu

#

that's the kind of thing that windows-centric users want

stark prawn
#

Octopi is a nice piece of software

sand goblet
#

you mean the OS?

#

or the raspberry pi distro?

#

or octoprint?

#

or the octopi software company?

stark prawn

The pacman frontend

sand goblet
#

Why would you use that

#

You're on KDE, use KDE's software discovery

stark prawn
#

It's what ships with manjaro

sand goblet
#

Ah right

#

antergos uses pamac

#

but you can use KDE Software Discovery on all three

stark prawn
#

Pamac is also manjaro

#

They use one of the other depending on which de

sand goblet
#

packagekit-qt5 is the package you need for Discovery to work with pacman

stark prawn
#

I'll check it out

sand goblet
#

it also supports flatpak

#

I actually just use yay directly, but yeah

stark prawn
sand goblet
#

looks like synaptic from back in the day

stark prawn

Not intuitive at all, kind of bad design imo

@gaunt root Small excerpt that represents how maths works in the current education system

Of course, not many students actually go on to concentrate in music, so only a few will
ever get to hear the sounds that the black dots represent. Nevertheless, it is important that every
member of society be able to recognize a modulation or a fugal passage, regardless of the fact
that they will never hear one. โ€œTo tell you the truth, most students just arenโ€™t very good at music.
They are bored in class, their skills are terrible, and their homework is barely legible. Most of
them couldnโ€™t care less about how important music is in todayโ€™s world; they just want to take the
minimum number of music courses and be done with it. I guess there are just music people and
non-music people. I had this one kid, though, man was she sensational! Her sheets were
impeccableโ€” every note in the right place, perfect calligraphy, sharps, flats, just beautiful.
Sheโ€™s going to make one hell of a musician someday.โ€

Waking up in a cold sweat, the musician realizes, gratefully, that it was all just a crazy
dream. โ€œOf course!โ€ he reassures himself, โ€œNo society would ever reduce such a beautiful and
meaningful art form to something so mindless and trivial; no culture could be so cruel to its
children as to deprive them of such a natural, satisfying means of human expression. How
absurd!โ€
gaunt root
#

couldn't be more accurate tbh

#

most pepole are so biast twords maths these days

#

like algebra youre given the formula

grave phoenix
#

Yeah eval is pretty safe

gaunt root
#

its a matter of litreally filling in the blanks

#

exactly like coding

#

were just filling in blanks

#

grave phoenix
#

we're?

proper dune
#

I hate how people view maths differently from other subjects. I hate the idea that maths is hard or that there are "maths people" or some nonsense like that

gaunt root
#

everyone allways knocks things without trying them

#

i think its cuz ppl have 0 confidence these days

grave phoenix
#

Math is beautiful not only because you can represent the whole universe with it, but even more

proper dune
#

I put 90% of the blame on the education system

gaunt root
#

exactly

#

were not exposed to the simple wanders

grave phoenix
#

You can represent concepts so abstract, that you can't even imagine it

proper dune
#

The education system is made by idiots. Maths at a high school level taught to be geared towards engineering, it's made to be annoyingly complex in algebra but meant to be straight up lacking conceptual thinking: you're meant to just go through the motions to solve the same problems with different numbers

#

It's idiotic and ridiculous

grave phoenix
#

Even so, changing the education system as a whole is pretty complicated...

#

We are kinda stuck with it for a while

gaunt root
#

i think maths should be presented to us on a more day to day basis with things like algebra and calculus where we learn how to properly apply it

proper dune
#

Applications are bountiful in other subjects. We should be introduced to maths, at least in high school, on an abstract level. Maths is about the abstract in its purest form

#

Starting off with something more physically related like geometry is a good start

gaunt root
#

maths sounds pretty good in college vs school

grave phoenix
#

Well, not only day to day things, for example also explaining how a bunch of stuff works, wanna know how a computer calculates transformations?

gaunt root
#

?

proper dune
#

That's more of a university level thing. Would require too much for a high school

grave phoenix
#

Yeah, ik, just an example

gaunt root
#

one thing that makes me angry are DATS we have here in ireland

grave phoenix
#

What's that?

gaunt root
#

appitude testing

#

it told me to staw away from coding

#

and science

#

even tough i love them

grave phoenix
#

Lol, those never are taken seriously

proper dune
#

aptitude tests are ridiculous

gaunt root
#

yeah but my guidence counsellor quotes them like the bible

proper dune
#

people should be given a page on what kind of things each career involves. With a CS major: it's pondering over questions like what is the best way to sort a bunch of numbers just by comparing them. Software engineering: what is the process behind making this computer application, how can i design it. etc

#

obvious more than just a sentence, half a page spent on just describing the career and then the other half on describing a particular topic (like the sorting example)

gaunt root

gaunt root
#

im just curious bout how they get into college

#

like what exams they take

#

we have the leaving cert

next wave
#

what is cyber security like?

grave phoenix
#

Here in Chile we have point systems. Ranging from 150 to 850, there's the NEM (calculated accordingly to the last 4 years of highschool), Ranking (given by your school), and PSU (University Selection Test, one for each subject), then an University can choose the percentage that's required for each one to be able to enter. For example, it could be 10% NEM, 10% Ranking, 50% PSU Math, 15% PSU Language and 15% PSU Chemistry

gaunt root
#

yeah we have points too

#

max is 600

#

its just oh this course is 300 get 300 and ur automatically in

#

its dumb

grave phoenix
#

Well, here those who have more points enter, given the quotas they offer

proper dune
#

@gaunt root In the US, they have GPA which is their average grade in their last 2-3 years or so + standardised exams that test basic maths and literacy ability. Uni applications send both of those + a personal statement and essays + a list of extracurriculars, sports and musics stuff they did

gaunt root
#

our way has no morrals

proper dune
#

Unis choose people based on all of the criteria + your parents income + your race

rough sapphire
#

oof

gaunt root
#

the US's way is fucked

proper dune
#

Americans get absolutely destroyed because their university admissions system sucks and their high school education system sucks

rough sapphire
#

yeah

#

not gonna lie, things are expensive over here too, but at least i got into a decent government uni

proper dune
#

Uni education is alright, not too different from the rest of the anglosphere other than that they get babysat more

gaunt root
#

uni in trealnd is like 2000 a yr

#

euro

proper dune
#

Aus is like ~$7000 USD per year

rough sapphire
#

damn

gaunt root
#

but the college i wanna go to is 200 a yr

rough sapphire
#

here it depends on the courses, and the uni

#

my course is from a government school, its like 1000 usd per year

grave phoenix
#

Oh, there's also the concept of national score, those people are the ones with most points, normally there's a little group of perfect 850s followed by a bunch of 750 or more

proper dune
#

but government also gives us "loans" with 0% interest to everyone, and you only pay them back through tax once you're earning above a certain threshold

river anvil
#

what

proper dune
#

so 7k USD is not too terrible in that context

river anvil
#

isnt college in america like dozens of thousands of dollars?

#

how do you guys got 2k a year

grave phoenix
#

Those are giving complete scholarships and can choose any University and any of career

gaunt root
#

@rough sapphire yeah mine is gov aswell but its funded both by the dall and the EU

rough sapphire
#

neat

proper dune
#

Uni in the US has a large range

#

Private unis cost tons

#

Depending on how much money they have and how nice they are, they may or may not give large scholarships

#

Top unis tend to make things cheap but places like BU even though they're good generally arent cheap

gaunt root
#

here ppl get there full course payed for them if they play sports

it evaluates a python expression

we can make dangerous one liner function and put it in eval

i think not. 1. it was wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap

Like a kettle

vapid bluff

right, but the heat of a potential fire + gas pipe = not good, i'd think

vapid bluff

water's generally pumped from the water tank

which is generally upstairs

vapid bluff

ohhh it has its own tank ok

gentle moss

lmao is that actually true about your bloatware being deleted?

sand goblet
#

Yeah, this laptop is like twice as fast now

#

Haha

proper dune
#

That's hilarious

rough sapphire
#

@sand goblet is it nice?

sand goblet
#

I think someone is going to miss Smart Gesture

#

But I don't use the touchpad

lone otter
#

hahaha

river anvil
#

smart gesture

#

thats like if you use tablets

proper dune
#

Honestly, over time it's hard for me to trust companies other than Toshiba and Dell with laptops

sand goblet
#

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, Asus make garbage laptops

#

It's still a piece of shit

river anvil
#

i actually have an asus right now

#

:[

#

this laptop was relatively cheap for its specs

proper dune
#

I actively refuse to buy from Lenovo and Asus

#

Oh HP is okay too I guess, i havent heard too much bad about them

river anvil
#

i wish there wasnt so much drama with big tech companies

proper dune
#

There's drama with essentially every industry

river anvil
#

yea i guess

#

sometimes i just want to buy something and have it work

sand goblet
#

HP have poor build quality, but they're otherwise OK laptops

#

Some people I know that've had them have had them literally fall apart

rough sapphire
#

hp is shit now.. I think they're only around in certain countries

proper dune
#

Yeah out of the three I'm okay with, Toshiba has had the best build quality while HP has had the worst. Dell is closer to Toshiba than HP

sand goblet
#

Toshiba uses some nasty hardware though

#

Their graphics gear specifically is problematic

#

I know this because of Minecraft, amusingly

proper dune
#

Oof, story time?

sand goblet
#

They shipped laptops with graphics cards that specifically have problems running Minecraft and nothing else

proper dune
#

๐Ÿ‘€

#

How

#

interesting

#

I always played minecraft on a toshiba but that was a long while ago

#

I cant believe minecraft is still around

rough sapphire
#

T430

sand goblet
#

Haha, well, it is

rough sapphire
#

thats the thick bitch btw

sand goblet
#

One of many

vapid bluff
#

all i know about toshiba is they have no overvoltage protection on some of their hard drives

rough sapphire
#

toshiba make the worst laptops

vapid bluff
#

and that's enough toshiba for a lifetime for me

proper dune
#

amateur hour, even my first semester engineering project was overvoltage protected. a single LDO counts as protection, right? :^)

rough sapphire
#

they give you min spec ram when it can fit way more and you have to oc the shit out of them to get any performance

vapid bluff
#

lol the placeholders for the diodes are actually there on the board, they just cheaped out to save that extra 0.000001 cent and didnt solder it on

proper dune
#

i never got over the word "zener diode" for some reason. always feels like i'm doing magic when using them

vapid bluff
#

is it bad that zener diode makes me think of the zenos from dragon ball super... ๐Ÿ˜…

proper dune
#

i think of it as the name of some old great wizard

#

exactly why i never got over the name

vapid bluff
#

he knows one spell: overvoltagus protectus

#

funilly enough they have diodes for reverse polarity protection though

#

which is, afaik, more or less impossible with sata power connections

proper dune
#

people mess up reverse polarity far often than voltage surges

vapid bluff
#

if your psu cables have the pins in reverse polarity there are much bigger problems at hand
