Not appropriate language thank you.
😂
wot a nob
wow
lol
@tulip palm All I do is install the requirements and execute run.py to deploy it?
i can't remember, but i think so lmao
lol okay
@vapid bluff I got the update
Clipboard history and screen snip are my most used in 1809
So my computer is reaching the end of its life. I need to get something new . Im currently using windows, but its always been a pain to develop on. Was looking at getting a macbook or iMac, but have never used OSX. Anyone have any comments on developing on OSX? The other idea is to get windows laptop/pc and dualboot with fedora
i use osx, i dont really have any problems developing on it. Maybe you might want a linux distro that is similar to windows? @gray venture
I'm open to anything that isn't windows. I've used fedora, kali and ubuntu, and at work we use VMs with redhat I think, but I have no preference. Oddly I'm considering how my choice will reflect me. If you mention at work that your PC has windows, you get laughed out of the room by the arch guys 😛 Im happy going with the coffee shop hipster vibe from macbooks. Im not sure fedora gives a great vibe. My bro laughs at the name alone. Ubuntu gets mocked for being too user friendly for some reason..
Definitely overthinking this
Is the workplace the right place for Arch elitism 👀
its more of a friendly elitism really
Nah, people love to hate the shit out of Windows
It is the single best operating system for the majority of business needs.
The exposure to it allows almost anyone to have a gripe about it.
And that gripe can be valid.
It's pree shite 😉
I get that, but Ive been using windows forever, and the automatic updates every few weeks are really annoying and take way too long. But my main is that none of the harware vendors seem to be particularly good. Lenovo was solid, but isnt anymore. Dell seems to have become more reliable. But with Apple I assume you get decent hardware quality for the price
Dell stuff is shit hot right now
Their 3040 and 3060 series are GREAT value for money
plus their support is top notch
providing it's a simple issue*
having a quick look, the 3040 is a desktop?
Need to figure out how to source parts
XPS 15's are great
the XPS15 looks great, very aesthetic too
Which are the bastards that can handle like 3 HDD's in hardware RAID or w/e
They marketed it as a workstation replacement
HMmmmm
I need to convince myself that my personal projects are worth a £1500 laptop 😛
they're probably not
cheaper laptop + a scalable VPS? :P
these are the fuckers i was talking about
Both the Precision 7530 and Precision 7730 can run a six-core Xeon E-2176M at 2.70GHz and can ship with up to 64GB of RAM
for $1.5k ish
(starting price)
yeah, some people have a VPS for doing work with
if they're particularly internet connected
get arch + i3 gaps + compton + polybar + zsh and join the cool kids club
lul
nah, it's allright
i just used a really trimmed down lubuntu and 6 desktops
¯_(ツ)_/¯
oh and terminator
d e s p a c i t o
no shitposting pls
yes good posts no thanks
anyone here know about password hashing and salting?
so in mysql do i store the salt with the hash in the same variable?
or do i have hash and salt seperately?
(when i say hash i mean salted hash)
I think you usually store them in two separate columns
assuming that's what you mean with variable
because you need the plaintext salt to derive the hash
ok
I think some hashing results contain the salt in them, but I'm not 100% sure
can i just use the uid as the salt?
i would just generate a random salt per-user
It really depends on the implementation
if you're doing it yourself like volcyy suggests, you may be doing it wrong
if you use bcrypt it'll handle the salt stuff for you and you just have one column
ok
I got yelled at because there was an ad outside the store of something we were sold out of
Therefore it was my fault
And I scammed her, I gave a bad customer experience, I was disgusting. Yup lady totally my fault that it sold out without us noticing
It was just chocolate for crying out loud
hahahaha
hmm, well no
legally you're right
a poster is just an invitation to make a contract offer, not a contract offer itself
learned that last week in my laws lecture
My parents to it all the time hahaha
Fair enough dude
And it just sort of puts the rest of my day in a bad mood
:/
Feels bad man
And she followed me out to the poster and scolded me a 2nd time outside the shop
Iike come on..
hmmmmmmmmmmm
1 is bad enough
:>
Huh. So Microsoft isn’t the bad guy after all. Weird
They are using asure aswell
as much as you can knock Microsoft, they ain't actually that bad
Azure, and vscode are great examples
@tired osprey did u see the announcement
yes
@tired osprey did you see the announcement
hmmm
Don’t fucking block my boy sharp
Microsoft are actually fantastic right now and I don't know why
I just appreciate the meme of panicking when they bought GH and switching off ASAP to now going back
@bleak lintel what has changed it so much?
they seem to value open source
Useful.
theyve been doing for a long time
@steel fox i think a lot of people have done similar things to be honest
Yeah they donated a LOT to the Linux foundation
and azure has good support for linux systems
Wow it’s weird right the company with dozens of open source projects hosted on github value it
lmfao
They will be hoping powershell starts off
I haven't really got into it
Cause I either use bash
and install git bash on windows
But yeah. Lots have swapped back
powershell is a .NET command line so if you use a lot of .NET then powershell
if you want better interaction with linux and unix tools, bash
I dont have a vital need for either
The good C is also dot net
But I want to learn both
(or zsh because it's better, source: zsh-lovers(1))
:^)
@candid anvil how do u feel about zsh
whoat
@tired osprey pls halp
what
lel
do you know
oof
Pythagorean theorem?
yes
well it cannot be applied cus there is no 90º degree
then apply the sinus theorem
no, the cosinus right?
I cannot apply a sinners thereom. I am a follower of Christ.
or just split the triangle
i got (3x+6)/4+(1.5x-4)^2=73
well, I see many ways of doing it
yes i know poppadoms theorem
2.25 x^2 - 11.25 x - 55.5 = 0
..
that part's easy (i say even though i got bored of trying to do it by hand and pasted it into wolfram)
i'm worried that i've messed something up though, becuse that does not give a "nice looking" answer for x
i think i might be overthinking this...
hm
alomossett
Nix
yes
don't murder trees
too late
im already at half a page
but now I'd have to multiply with cosine
and me no like
Huuuuiiiiii
i can barley see dat
looks ez
but now id have to do
big x polynom of 4th degree - cos(60) * (4x^2+2x-12)
and i dont want to
cos 60 is 1/2 right
my maths teacher always tells me "there are multiple ways to kill the cat"
I THINK I GAAAT ITTT
so it boils down to
4x^4 + 4x^3-9x^2-11x+30
ONE SECC
does everyone agree?
i didnt try it but ye
okay
you can use polynomial division i think
i dont want to
NOW I JUST NEED TO PROVE X=5
dis has no solution
and yes import error is right
that number solves this equation too
you suck wolframalpha
hm
this solution |:(
okay i will sob quietly in a corner
i confused myself
i wrote the 2x-3 as only on the right side bottom
Math is silly
i got x=5, one away from 6
so many human errors
and i got -3 as well
ill go cry in a corner and rant about our school system never teaching us the cosinus theorem
bye
may i cry with you?
sobs uncontrollably
😦 i learnt this less then a year ago and still fucked
i made a error before even getting to the good part
more questions
if this happened to me in gcse
i will roll up to edexcel hq in my tank
and threaten them to change my grade
do you think it'll work? @tired osprey
what will work
So @sand goblet @rain spindle @glass gorge it appears my mobile thinks i did not get it
Old discord bug
i spent the entire evening on that question
only to get it wrong in the end
i will cry myself to sleep today

yknow there is this thing called cosine theorem but you dont have to know it
and no
^ is exponential and * is \cdot
I do!!!!
WHATS WRONG WITH YOU
asterisk is times shit
i know an indian who has an asterisk instance for........ not exactly legal stuff
did import say it wasn't
no
good.
i confused + with *
because i never learned that and typed from memory as import error told me yesterday
but i remembered the + wrong
so i wrote *
And then this happened
YES
At least you can do division of polynomials right?
.....
we were also told thats a thing
even I can?
but we wont need it
well
I appreciate you guys trying to help, I'm just mentally drained rn and overall very sad. I will resume tomorrow

there is an http error code with the name teapot and one day the NPM servers threw that code out so when you'd use npm to install them it would respond with " I am a teapot"

Can we somehow ban Windows?
unlikely
Yesterday I had to restore a W10 after faulty update which broke some vital dlls.
It was my first time restoring W10...
So I decided to go "the right way".
I started up sfc...
And it hanged.
I did dism...
And it hanged.
I've tried to restore Shindows from a ufd.
And it hanged.
I end up fixing some of windows installer "dependancies" via Ubuntu Live usb stick.
You can only use Windows if you know how to fix it with Linux.
Ah. Some fine memes from this laptop. The dude whos laptop it was installed two av apps.
Get an iron and flatten it out
Burn the phone witch
There is no way you can get it flatten.

MONGOLIA: In Mongolia, shamans have been known to instruct their clients to bathe in vodka not only to cleanse the body, but also the spirit of any negative energy or evil influences. Then, the dirty vodka must be discarded outside the home. Also, for a price, shamans have been known to enter a trance, leave their body and try to fight (or negotiate) with malevolent spirits on the behalf of clients.
wrong end get some vodka
Meditate. Leave your body. Start a drunk fight with evil spirit.
I once left my real billionaire body and couldn't find the way back.

It bothers me that lots of people start to learn coding to make games.
I get bothered even more when people learn python and want to make games with it.
I guess people play games, then decide they want to make a game, then find out python is relatively easy to learn and then find out it's not the greatest for making games
Yeah. I kinda get how it works. The thing I can't understand is why they want to make games in the first place.
because they don't realise how tedious it is
I mean if they like to play games do they want to make games to play them?
yes
Erhm. Where is the fun in playing games you've made?
where is the fun in using programs you made
Should it be fun?
I spent 4 hours programming a text based version of minesweeper in python, and the controls for it were terrible, so i played it once then never played it again
if its not fun why are you making programs in the first place
Because I solve problems.
Money idk lol
and then you make a new problem to solve
Tbh. I don't think that problems are need to be made. You just stumble on them trying to reach your goals.
What I would want to do is a mmo mmo maker or smth like this.
When you have people making a game online for others to play.
Like an online multi-access editor of some sort to allow people to make realms together or something.
Like this thingy ArmA now have. Kinda D&D GM mode or smth.
so a collaborative game maker maker?
that would be interesting
I think if such a framework existed, you'd see far more open source games that are far more complex
Fallout series kinda proved that modders can fix everything.
I feel like the idea itself is somewhat interesting but way too complex for me to even start trying to figure out some workflows.
to do it right, you'd need a strong grasp of several disciplines (or to collaborate with others that do)
Yeah I get it. And I thought about it as a wierd "inception" thing. In order to make mmo mmo maker you have to make tools for a maker of mmo mmo maker.
yeah, quite meta lol
it's definitely possible though
given enough thought and resources
such a brave choice

how do people generally find others to help them with open source projects?
or is it always the people who find them
Label your issues with "Hacktoberfest" 😅
good thing to try in november
That was the joke answer (well, unless it's October, then you're guaranteed to get some contributions)
The actual answer is longer
Marketing and getting the word out about your project is crucial, no one will come if they don't know about it (we have a channel for that, #303934982764625920)
Just as important is making your project friendly to contributers
Create a Contributing.md file (there are loads of fantastic examples, I can link some later when I'm at a computer if you'd like)
Open issues with major items that need to be done
Comment your code and format it in a format that's at least somewhat aligned with generally accepted norms (for Python, PEP8 and PEP 257)
Be friendly and welcoming to newcomers, and don't neglect them or the project. If someone opens a PR and you haven't responded in a week (and it's not a holiday), their initial desire to contribute will begin to fizzle out.
@rough sapphire hope that helps
@rough sapphire from personal experience, I would also recommend creating a community (like a discord server) where would-be contributors can go and get in touch with you guys. Contributing to some random github project is okay, but contributing to a community that you've actually interacted with is far more fun. Ideally you'll have people in that community who are ready to help guide new contributors through the process of setting up their local dev environment and selecting the right issue so they can be effective right away.
you might put information about that in the CONTRIBUTING.md file as well.

Whoever took the picture and didn't rotate it is worse.
Shall I rotate it?
I hope this one is correct, otherwise i'll look like a big dumbass
😅
Or instead of the last line you could do c2 = (ab-sqr(ab))(ab+sqr(ab))
I was mentioned
@tame pier pinging you regarding those examples
bro
@tame terrace Thank you for your answer. It makes a lot of sense to make the onboarding process as simple as possible.
this same question
for like 3 days
lol
this is haunting us because we couldnt figure it out
Are you talking about import errors problem
ye
it was, but i made silly mistakes
Teachers here told us yknow there is this cosinus theorem but you'll never need it
learnt it but it was buried deep in my brain
@rough sapphire yeah. but more than just simplifying onboarding, try to get that personal contact as early as possible. humanize your project. people don't want to contribute code to a faceless ether, they wanna help people
I screwed up the math when i tried it this weekend, but it was probably possible to solve using only definition of cosine and pythagorean theorem
I mean I would've solved it if I wouldn't have made the mistake
And as I figure my mistake out I'm not trying anymore
@tame terrace I understand. Building a community is actually something I was looking forward to doing once my project gets released, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm definitely going to make some welcome guides and other things though to set the stage that
- They're appreciated and
- We're all in this together as a team
thanks
Is it wrong to work alone on something big?
Like if you don't have anyone to assist on your task/project?
You gotta have hella passion
You'll become a man of many hat. Those hats can get heavy. There's a lot to learn and plenty of things you'd benefit from extra eyes on.
Study is life long journey so I'm ready for it, have enough patience to not fall for quantum leap.
Thanks for the great piece of advice, Thane.
Eh. I'm talking out my ass. Go for it. It'll either work or it won't. Either way, you'll learn plenty.
Have fun with it.
I've been working on a multi-month project, which is also my first ever project (started python/programming in March)
it's extremely hard
but you will guaranteed learn a lot
while I've coded everything by myself, there is one caveat
If it won't work then I'll just take a nap and start working on it again, although I have you guys to clear out my doubts(but before asking them I'll try to search on it internet)
Sounds interesting.
I've had experienced programmers I had to ask questions to on various parts, and they might open you to a new paradigm of approaching the problem
that has been a very valuable part of my project (and my growth in general)
I've been learning of lot of CS concepts on my own and I thought if I don't implement it then I won't be able to understand it completely.
My classmates are not interested in programming/security as I am and it's kinda hard to find someone to work with as they'll be busy with their own work.
I definitely plan to open up what I'm doing on github, but I will say the extra frustration in the end is worth it
and you can say to employers/others that you built this completely on your own, without any help
with something ambitious enough, that will definitely command respect
might want to start going to hackathons, can make lots of friends there with similar interests
go join a group, make a group chat with them and send each other memes for an year or whatever
I've never heard of that book, but googling it, it looks really good
I'm a student with not a good financial background and hackathons are usually held in other states.
It's a good book, recommend on top non fiction book reddit post as one of the best book.
Where are you located? I find it hard to believe you cant find hackathons without going to other states
India.
Once my graduation will over, I'll move there.

That is not an answer byte
and what is your excuse so that I don't kill you?
coincidentally I'm currently listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXzMD065HEk, so there might be some collateral damage...
Pre-order "Space 1992: Rise Of The Chaos Wizards" now: http://shop.napalmrecords.com/gloryhammer US customers: www.napalmrecordsamerica.com/store/gloryhammer...
Everything under 20 percent is collateral damage
So if you could only 1 fifth kill me it would be fine
what is colgate damage
which fifth of you?
I don't know what Colgate damage is if you are asking for collateral it's damage which wasn't intended to be dealt
Like shooting a rocket on a terrorist camp and killing civilians
oh so i dealt collateral damage to you when we were playing WoT
If you didn't shoot me on purpose yes
then that was colgate damage
oh okay
only if you shot him with tooth paste
You can kill my appendix and my cartilage on the right side (my right) of my chest if you want

that doesn't add up to a fifth yet...

"the CIA is trying to make you think that a switch case statement does work like an if else it doesnt look at this"
after so many convenient suicides, I'm convinced to release any software that threatens any large monopolies requires you to be completely anonymous
ie, you cannot tie your work to yourself
(or just oss it so if its actually good other people will work on it too)
yeah
He codes, he writes his own programmes and he’s helping teachers to set up computers. And he’s only 8. But what could it mean when your child is ‘too smart’?...
how many parents here coach their kids in programming from time to time?
Problem with an "8 year old programmer" is that they won't be making programs with any complexity, at all. Because they lack the logical thinking you would obtain down the road from going through years of school.
And an 8 year old will learn things far quicker than anyone here. So, this really isn't too impressive. The only reason for why this isn't common is because tons of people at that age don't really know what a "programmer" is or does and doesn't care to study programming
I think the problem is simply the lack of onboarding materials to bring younger kids into this field
it has gotten a lot better over the past few years, however

😮
why would you?
Why sit down period?
any chance any of u are good at c++? im trying to convert a very simple recursive python function to c++ and it's not working 😦
just show the code
def subset_sum(numbers, target, partial=[]):
s = sum(partial)
# check if the partial sum is equals to target
if s == target:
print "sum(%s)=%s" % (partial, target)
if s >= target:
return # if we reach the number why bother to continue
for i in range(len(numbers)):
n = numbers[i]
remaining = numbers[i+1:]
subset_sum(remaining, target, partial + [n])
subset_sum([3,9,8,4,5,7,10],15)
thats the python
the c++ is a little longer tho, u sure i should show it here?
@rough sapphire avoid weight sets, airplanes, and cars made after 2003
#include <iostream>
#include <vector>
int unsigned sum(const std::vector<int unsigned>& v){
int unsigned sum = 0;
for (auto& n: v){
sum += n;
}
return sum;
}
void _combinations(const std::vector<int unsigned>& numbers, const int unsigned& target, std::vector<int unsigned> partial = {}){
const int unsigned s = sum(numbers);
// check if partial sum equals target
if (s == target){
std::cout << "Sum (";
for (auto& p : partial){
std::cout << p << ", ";
}
std::cout << ") = " << target << std::endl;
}
if (s >= target) {
return;
}
for (int unsigned i = 0; i < numbers.size(); ++i){
int unsigned n = numbers[i];
std::vector<int unsigned> remaining;
for (int unsigned j = i+1; j < numbers.size(); ++j){
remaining.push_back(numbers[j]);
}
partial.push_back(n);
_combinations(remaining, target, partial);
}
}
int main(){
std::vector<int unsigned> v = {3,9,8,4,5,7,10};
constexpr int unsigned target = 15;
_combinations(v, target);
return 0;
}
and whats the problem?
looks solid to me
maybe try either debugging it or inserting some debug output to find out where it exits and continue your work from there
is there a special way to debug in c++? or is it just the same as python where u insert print in random places?
that is not debugging
for debugging you use a debugger
which is possible in python too
what you are referring to is debugging output which is possible too but you might also want to use a debugger like gdb
or pdb in python
(if you are running python 3.7 you can just insert a breakpoint() in the line where you want to debug and run the file again once it gets there itll start the debugger)
ah im dumb
i was summing the wrong thing
ok now it works 😃
ok nvm it doesnt, but that was an issue
well it got fixed, and no idea why the fix works, and the person who proposed it doesnt really know either
but it works now 😃
IT WOOOORKS!! IT REALLY WORKS!!! NO ONE TOUCH IT.
Debugging is very handy
Often you can dump the current state of all the variables, including locals and globals , the stack, and sometimes make changes to them before continuing
Putting prints is quick and braindead but I've discovered doesn't scale well nor is it efficient
yeah. learn pdb or the pycharm debugger and use the new breakpoint keyword in 3.7 if you're doing pdb, saves lots of time. when shit I didn't write breaks at work it is my go-to tool to understanding why.
I remember starting my career and wolf-fence debugging the shit out of errors. Then I gotgud and used a proper ddebugger. Then I had to switch to stateless cloud apps and I'm back to logging the bajeezus out of things. Granted that's more managed with a proper logging module.
Also, the latest PyCharm release fixed breakpoint so it'll exit into PyCharm's debugger instead of pdb
How is PyCharm's debugger? I rarely delve in to full IDEs for Python work.
Excellent.
@normal ferry
it's basically pdb, within pycharm
so you can do anything you could usually do with pdb
including executing arbitrary code and such
pycharm pro is also able to graph threads and coroutines
Gotcha. Yeah I figured it would be a nice wrapper around pdb. I like that it has variable dropdowns in the debugger. Thread/Coroutine graphs would also be very interesting to see in practice. I like what I see in PyCharm's docs.
Happy! is one messed up tv show
eh, weirder issues for me
i did get some more of my tune done though @lone otter
been making it over idk like 3-4 days

anyone know of a site that lists every single documented audio file extension?
there's only one real extension in existance
oh?
.rm
rm bisk
An audio file format is a file format for storing digital audio data on a computer system. The bit layout of the audio data (excluding metadata) is called the audio coding format and can be uncompressed, or compressed to reduce the file size, often using lossy compression. Th...
this list is good but it's missing a lot
i was making a joke about the Real Media company
same
It's great that I can use non proprietary technology to diseminate music to the masses
or just use soemoene elses platform
sorta like this https://soundcloud.com/b5beats/neon-nightlife
is this link a list of audio file extensions
no it's a song i've been making over the past 3-4 days
does the song list out audio file extensions
also "extensions" is a bad word for it
since you can have extensions encoded in different formats
well until i can figure out a way of quickly checking audio file encoding im gonna rely on extensions
you're not doing with the weird ones i assume?
if so then most will contain some shit in the header
oh no, my program will support every format ever. even .rm
ok, tbh, idk
im just passing files into QMediaPlayer
and it does some stuff automagically to play them. idk what formats it supports. but i think it uses directshow.
wav, mp3, aiff, m4a, flac, m4b, m4p, ogg and wma
qmediaplayer is a Qt class for playing media 😛
you know what. ill just make it customizable. so if people want to use their wacky formats they can add it themselves.
that's why trying to classify things off extensions is tricky
:3
I'm listening to one of those hip hop radio stations on youtube
like a jazzy coffee shop one
just been writing out dumb lyrics, anyone wanna hear?
Go for it @gentle moss
aw man
