So my computer is reaching the end of its life. I need to get something new . Im currently using windows, but its always been a pain to develop on. Was looking at getting a macbook or iMac, but have never used OSX. Anyone have any comments on developing on OSX? The other idea is to get windows laptop/pc and dualboot with fedora

robust sierra
#

i use osx, i dont really have any problems developing on it. Maybe you might want a linux distro that is similar to windows? @gray venture

gray venture
#

I'm open to anything that isn't windows. I've used fedora, kali and ubuntu, and at work we use VMs with redhat I think, but I have no preference. Oddly I'm considering how my choice will reflect me. If you mention at work that your PC has windows, you get laughed out of the room by the arch guys 😛 Im happy going with the coffee shop hipster vibe from macbooks. Im not sure fedora gives a great vibe. My bro laughs at the name alone. Ubuntu gets mocked for being too user friendly for some reason..

#

Definitely overthinking this

its more of a friendly elitism really

gentle moss
#

Nah, people love to hate the shit out of Windows

#

It is the single best operating system for the majority of business needs.

#

The exposure to it allows almost anyone to have a gripe about it.

#

And that gripe can be valid.

proper dune
#

It's pree shite 😉

gray venture
#

I get that, but Ive been using windows forever, and the automatic updates every few weeks are really annoying and take way too long. But my main is that none of the harware vendors seem to be particularly good. Lenovo was solid, but isnt anymore. Dell seems to have become more reliable. But with Apple I assume you get decent hardware quality for the price

proper dune
#

Dell is decent

#

My current favourite choice would be an XPS 15 or 13

gentle moss
#

Dell stuff is shit hot right now

#

Their 3040 and 3060 series are GREAT value for money

plus their support is top notch

#

anyone here know about password hashing and salting?

ebon quarry
#

Sure

#

Ask away

sullen thorn
#

so in mysql do i store the salt with the hash in the same variable?

#

or do i have hash and salt seperately?

#

(when i say hash i mean salted hash)

ebon quarry
#

I think you usually store them in two separate columns

#

assuming that's what you mean with variable

#

because you need the plaintext salt to derive the hash

sullen thorn
#

ok

ebon quarry
#

I think some hashing results contain the salt in them, but I'm not 100% sure

sullen thorn
#

can i just use the uid as the salt?

ebon quarry
#

i would just generate a random salt per-user

sand goblet
#

It really depends on the implementation

#

if you're doing it yourself like volcyy suggests, you may be doing it wrong

#

if you use bcrypt it'll handle the salt stuff for you and you just have one column

@bleak lintel which is better?

MONGOLIA: In Mongolia, shamans have been known to instruct their clients to bathe in vodka not only to cleanse the body, but also the spirit of any negative energy or evil influences. I guess people play games, then decide they want to make a game, then find out python is relatively easy to learn and then find out it's not the greatest for making games

#

What I would want to do is a mmo mmo maker or smth like this.

#

When you have people making a game online for others to play.

#

Like an online multi-access editor of some sort to allow people to make realms together or something.

#

Like this thingy ArmA now have. Kinda D&D GM mode or smth.

so a collaborative game maker maker?

Yeah.

Create a Contributing.md file (there are loads of fantastic examples, I can link some later when I'm at a computer if you'd like)

#

Open issues with major items that need to be done

#

Comment your code and format it in a format that's at least somewhat aligned with generally accepted norms (for Python, PEP8 and PEP 257)

#

Be friendly and welcoming to newcomers, and don't neglect them or the project. If someone opens a PR and you haven't responded in a week (and it's not a holiday), their initial desire to contribute will begin to fizzle out.

#

@rough sapphire hope that helps

tough stratus
#

Yeah, Nice formatting helps for sure

#

Pep8 is the standard for python, pretty much

tame terrace
#

@rough sapphire from personal experience, I would also recommend creating a community (like a discord server) where would-be contributors can go and get in touch with you guys. Contributing to some random github project is okay, but contributing to a community that you've actually interacted with is far more fun. Ideally you'll have people in that community who are ready to help guide new contributors through the process of setting up their local dev environment and selecting the right issue so they can be effective right away.

tame terrace

@rough sapphire yeah. but more than just simplifying onboarding, try to get that personal contact as early as possible. humanize your project. people don't want to contribute code to a faceless ether, they wanna help people

sinful copper

I screwed up the math when i tried it this weekend, but it was probably possible to solve using only definition of cosine and pythagorean theorem

HELLO LaDS

#

@tired osprey i am still trying to solve the problem

tired osprey
#

I mean I would've solved it if I wouldn't have made the mistake

#

And as I figure my mistake out I'm not trying anymore

rough sapphire
#

@tame terrace I understand. Building a community is actually something I was looking forward to doing once my project gets released, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm definitely going to make some welcome guides and other things though to set the stage that

  1. They're appreciated and
  2. We're all in this together as a team

If it won't work then I'll just take a nap and start working on it again, although I have you guys to clear out my doubts(but before asking them I'll try to search on it internet)

#

Sounds interesting.

I've had experienced programmers I had to ask questions to on various parts, and they might open you to a new paradigm of approaching the problem

I've been learning of lot of CS concepts on my own and I thought if I don't implement it then I won't be able to understand it completely.

I definitely plan to open up what I'm doing on github, but I will say the extra frustration in the end is worth it

Problem with an "8 year old programmer" is that they won't be making programs with any complexity, at all. Because they lack the logical thinking you would obtain down the road from going through years of school.

#

And an 8 year old will learn things far quicker than anyone here. So, this really isn't too impressive. The only reason for why this isn't common is because tons of people at that age don't really know what a "programmer" is or does and doesn't care to study programming

I think the problem is simply the lack of onboarding materials to bring younger kids into this field

#

and whats the problem?

sullen thorn
#

it uh doesnt work

#

just exits with exit code 0

#

no output

tired osprey
#

looks solid to me

#

maybe try either debugging it or inserting some debug output to find out where it exits and continue your work from there

sullen thorn
#

is there a special way to debug in c++? or is it just the same as python where u insert print in random places?

tired osprey
#

that is not debugging

#

for debugging you use a debugger

#

which is possible in python too

sullen thorn
#

oh

#

in python i just use prints - works well for me 🤷

tired osprey
#

what you are referring to is debugging output which is possible too but you might also want to use a debugger like gdb

#

or pdb in python

#

(if you are running python 3.7 you can just insert a breakpoint() in the line where you want to debug and run the file again once it gets there itll start the debugger)

sullen thorn
#

ah im dumb

#

i was summing the wrong thing

robust sierra

tame pier
#

Debugging is very handy

#

Often you can dump the current state of all the variables, including locals and globals , the stack, and sometimes make changes to them before continuing

#

Putting prints is quick and braindead but I've discovered doesn't scale well nor is it efficient

tame terrace
#

yeah. learn pdb or the pycharm debugger and use the new breakpoint keyword in 3.7 if you're doing pdb, saves lots of time. when shit I didn't write breaks at work it is my go-to tool to understanding why.

normal ferry
#

I remember starting my career and wolf-fence debugging the shit out of errors. Then I gotgud and used a proper ddebugger. Then I had to switch to stateless cloud apps and I'm back to logging the bajeezus out of things. Granted that's more managed with a proper logging module.

tame pier
#

Also, the latest PyCharm release fixed breakpoint so it'll exit into PyCharm's debugger instead of pdb

normal ferry
#

How is PyCharm's debugger? I rarely delve in to full IDEs for Python work.

sand goblet
#

Excellent.

#

it's basically pdb, within pycharm

#

so you can do anything you could usually do with pdb

#

including executing arbitrary code and such

#

pycharm pro is also able to graph threads and coroutines

normal ferry
#

Gotcha. Yeah I figured it would be a nice wrapper around pdb. I like that it has variable dropdowns in the debugger. Thread/Coroutine graphs would also be very interesting to see in practice. I like what I see in PyCharm's docs.
