A study also found a relation between opera music and surviving cancer
@tired osprey
If it wasn't for the comic sans I'd appreciate
whats wrong with comic sans ms
when you listen to opera music you generally are able to afford better medical care
i should've made the background into this
(haha do you get the funny pun its so funny hahahaahhhahaahhaqa)
silence
@tired osprey this...this is true
They got some derivation of the nobel price for that
It's the derivation for the most ridiculous research
Yes
hey nix
you will always have better internet than me
however, this is a miracle http://www.speedtest.net/result/7657808606
Yup
No
Sorry for the confusion it was 5 years ago I didn't remember correctly, it's the survival rate of mice with heart transplantation @sinful turtle @gusty lynx
very similar to opera music
"Auditory stimulation of opera music induced prolongation of murine cardiac allograft survival and maintained generation of regulatory CD4+CD25+ cells"
Classical music has an effect on survival rate of heart transplanted mice
Paper is there
so.... let's just take the heart out of this mouse and put it in another one, while having a fat lady shriek at them...
for science!
does anyone have a switch im bored
What kind
awww
switch day:

I don't have one of those then
Man i was ready for a light switch jam
No @worn kite let's replace their heart and sometimes do the fat lady thing to see wether it makes a difference or not
wow that's ∑psilonsetting

Bus driver is listening to '40s pop, whistling and singing along

Vim is an editor
I don't think it does linting or static type analysis or navigation linkages between components of a project
Some plugins can do that if you want
But it's still an editor, just a good one then
I code inside UpBGE 😄
in the built in editor
as for versioning, I save to a local repo nightly
and have stuff in google drive / one drive etc
there is a plugin to Use visual studio though
and launch the game engine from the ide.

Kind of @tulip narwhal C# is interpreted to byte code and then that bytecode is compiled by the CLR
what would be amazing is something like nuitka that used a GAN to generate modules and test them
and try and write a faster and faster lib to replace your functions you call with C++ or bytecode or whatever.
code thing using python -> go to bed -> wake up to 40x faster implementation
I use Unix as my IDE and Vim as my editor component of the IDE :^)
Coding with random.sample and waiting until something runs 👌
Ok
thx :)
Joseph you're missing the integrated part of IDE
Unix is integrated into his pc obviously
yeah

what is interpretting an AST?
what is bytecode compiled language mean?
🤦
that's depressing Nix
after he wouldnt accept it his "mentor" (dunno a good translation) a cs phd guy and another cs student told him i was right
he accepted that

lmao
a simple google search could have confirmed it
: )
i feel bad for the mentor
yeah
yeah im not even sure how they got their project done with a programmer like him
^
and with great and terrible effort
(on the other hand the winners used like 99 percent open source software and had a cs master guy as programmer so...)
well i just hope he/her learned something

HA!
👌
Lucy, there are far too many good answers to that, many of which aren't SFW o///o
@wild yarrow some members of this server kept saying that they used the toaster to make grilled cheese
you put the toaster on its side, stick a piece of bread with cheese on it inside of it, and pray to sweet cheesus that it doesn't short circuit and burn your house down.
all the cool kids are doing it.
thats the american way to make grilled cheese
🦅 🧀
i make mine in a cast iron or ceramic like sane people
how does grilling a cheese waste a caste iron
you can like deep fry stuff in a cast iron
unless you use cheep chinese iron
c:
yeah, skillet and replacing the butter with mayo on the bread is so good
it's so... idk
it's just amazing
it's how i grill my cheese now O///O
I need one of those
they're really nice, def reccomend
it can do more than just toast, too
O.O
at least the picture I linked, technically it's a table grill.
OH, nice
any chance one of you can compare 2 databases for me?
i basically want a share memory thing so like mutliple python scripts can share memory
doesnt need to be ACID compliant or anything
kinda like redis, but redis is single threaded and ACID compliant :/
my 2 options are aerospike and voldemort
and im pretty sure i wanna use aerospike (it looks amazing) but its also really hard to research voldemort
like i cant just google how fast is voldemort
like wtf
You can timeit if you wanted speed comparisons
hmmm
do ppl actually test stuff like that?
like people actually bother to install databases and run tests?
I could give you a random hiphop name. we provide this as a service. free of charge!
hiphop name BEST
@wild yarrow you have to keep a cast iron seasoned
Although I'm a hypocrite because I have a little cast iron that fits exactly one grilled cheese
But that's okay
i didn't wash my cast iron for a few days and now it's got rust :/
is cast iron worth
this offtopic name is the best
@everyone
you do have to keep it seasoned
but it's not that terrible
it's like 5 minutes per thing you use it for
o.o
oh jeez
phew
o.o
yeah i wouldn't trust them either o.o
you don't dishwash cast iron
wtf
i'm sorry tho, that's disfortunate that they seem unaware
No you put it next to the sink and wait for it to magically clean itself like any sensible person
There's quite a few of those magical rules

about to wipe my laptop and reinstall fresh copy of windows, dont think i need to save anything, any tips or suggestions before i do so?
like something i may have forgotten?
well half of it is like games and films, but theres at least 50GB of files
ok fuck im gonna move stuff to dropbox just in case
or ill be too anxious
other ppl cant see stuff on your dropbox account right?
nope
I think you typo'd @sullen thorn
I think you meant "Fresh copy of freshly compiled Gentoo Linux"
nah i got servers for that
would be weird using linux with a gui anyway
also...
tf
ah shit i deleted itunes :/ needed that
no idea how i managed not to delete discord
Yup
I don’t wanna keep my files tho lol (but also scared of deleting something important)
I put the ones that might be important on gdrive and i’ll sort through them later
Mostly that they might contain some code that I don’t wanna rewrite
Never really figured out git on windows, so I would just make files and name them and save them randomly
Like mainbot1, mainbot2, bot2improved...
So I have no idea what each file actually is
And whenever I managed to finish projects, then i’d upload them manually to github
So the really important stuff is there
Well thank fuck u convinced me to make a backup
Had an excel file with a detaile description of how I wanted my bot storage to work
Like MySQL, in memory python, and in memory aerospike
And if I deleted that id be really sad
Gamedev is hard. It is even much harder when you decide to do it as a solo developer. It is close to impossible if you also have to provide for your family. How can you stay productive when the world doesn't want you to finish your game?
On top of all that, it would be really neat if you could stay sane.
being sane as a starting requirement isn't realistic
only an insane person would want to stay sane

we've had enough truth for the day
have you found that there actually a substantial difference between the "random" discussion on different forums ?
yes
I sent this to a friend that loves c# and knows no other jang other than c#
"communities tend to be different from each other"
yes, go on
@rough sapphire stop spamming that
you posted that before
you just posted that in another channel
Not spamming.. also deleted it there
if you're on a python discord and a philosophy discord, either one could rant about trump again and again
Yea i know.. i have a deasese, if i don't get reaction i have to report
is this what the random discussion on the python channel tends to be like ?
I find a no politics rule exists in many offtopics on different servers because it can become hard to mod
but we're not an off-topic community
well yeah, that's not exactly a surprise
off-topic channels are always busy on every community
and that isn't off-topic
If ur not an offtopic community, you should endorse on-topic ones.
okay, sure, smartass :P
but people are always going to be off-topic sometimes
it just naturally happens, that's how conversation works
I mean having 3 offtopic channels to 1 discussion also helps.. to go offtopic
I like to argue with owners untill i get banned lul
but then, yknow, we grew
we're almost at 8000 users
it was hard to follow conversation in a single channel
Yea you only grew cause every other lang sucks and python is life
"you grew because people like the subject of your server"
yes, go on
give me more revelations
:P
And because other servers suk
there aren't really many other python communities on discord
we're the biggest, as far as we know
And also why is java #1 and python only #3
because more companies use java?
java is super common
google uses a whole bunch of languages
including java
android is entirely java-based
because bullying is ever the answer to anything
Jawa is slovvvv
Wdymmmm
the JVM is a wonder of modern software engineering
Ok guess i'm just dumb
you're just comparing your experience of java to your experience of minecraft
Yea
Why is this a toaster chese channel?
Oh, the off-topic channels are renamed randomly every day
Really?
Yep
I suggest using channel name no-c-discussions
@royal lake does it
Oo
we have a huge list of potential names
Gimme one ;-;
but you'll have to wait for them to come around :P
well, toaster-cheese is one
haha
Rude.
it's part of the fun
Everything is rude.
well you're doing a good job of perpetuating that
Some people started a fight with me in another channel because i said rude
And then i got banned yay
g stands for legend seems like a meta title
Some people don't understand my humor
how rude of them
^
r00d
Also.. where did the minecraft channel go...? 😛
awaaaay
To another galaxy i know..
to a better place
we used to have a minecraft server but people stopped playing
I used song lyrics there..
I had an idea
I wanna try
I will download popular youtube videos and upload them on my channel

Rip. Rosenstein getting fired
holy shit really?
ye
some sources leaked he was resigning, he came out and said no i'm 100% not resigning if I leave it's a firing
ah yes
if he's fired there's some rules about succession or something iirc
whereas if he resigns trump can just pick whoever he wants
right?
is this us politics stuff?
no, this is patrick
I'm honestly not sure on succession vs picking
🚜
yeah, it's about trump potentially firing a government official who's investigating him @glass gorge

Waiting for a dishwasher to finish is probably the most boring thing ive done all day
Are they actually rewriting python just to change slave-master stuff?
study rock music
sounds lovely
out of curiosity, what libraries does this change affect?
too nice to be true though
They aren't changing all instances
Only the ones that actually don't make sense
And those are almost entirely internal
i dont think anyone's claiming that it's going to fix society
The people pushing for it claim it's going to fix society
Because nothing is allowed to be fucking insignificant anymore
can you show me one instance of a place where someone claims changing these terms will reduce/fix slavery in any way?
I mean, if you're asking me that, you haven't done much research
You can go read about the controversy, and then actually look at the comment threads
ah, the old 'google it cause i dont have evidence to back myself up'
Ah yes, of course, there can be no other reason
I couldn't possibly be on my phone while cooking dinner
That'd be weird
then just say 'im too busy' or something to that effect
Right?
Well yeah but that won't tell you where to look
You need to actually dig into the comments
i think these things are a waste of time. just think of what great things you could build to make a lot of developers happy rather than the time you spend on replacing some words because 2 people think they will make anything better with it
And tbh I don't blame you if you don't what to, they really get to be pretty shitty
i can see the validity of both points of view, but imo the side that's getting upset about the change is more ridiculous
if it's really such an insignificant term to you then whats the harm in changing it?
The article makes a good point
In some cases it's a significant workload and the people championing the change actually don't give a shit about doing good
Like, you say you're not interested in making the change and they start calling you a nazi or a fascist
So apparently the feelings someone might feel when it relates to a term don't matter when you disagree with them, eh?
It's an empty crusade
They just want to pretend that they're actually helping people to make themselves feel better
And they really don't give a shit about the collateral
That's my take on it, anyway
There are things people can do to make people's lives better
This isn't it
Not to mention the fact that the master/slave model in context actually does do a pretty good job of explaining some software setups
So apparently the feelings someone might feel when it relates to a term don't matter when you disagree with them, eh? isnt this literally what the people who are against the change are doing?
kind of ironic, no?
Not really?
I mean, I'm not gonna try to make someone feel like shit just because I disagree with them
the people who are against the change are dismissing the points of view of those for it because they disagree with them
You're missing the point
These are people pretending to be offended in the stead of other people
thats your opinion
The people they're "sticking up for" often don't actually care about it
ignoring context, it would take hundred of hours across all languages that use the terminology to change the source code and the documentation for the sourcecode
That's why the progranners are angry
It's a lot of work for something that's a very personal reason
Yeah, if it were easy then I wouldn't give a shit
I rename my variables on a whim simply because my code is usually very short
the same argument could be applied to more or less any big change
'x results in potential knock on work then it shouldnt be undertaken'
try asking them to put in a few hundred hours of community service in impoverished neighbourhoods
not that im even convinced thats really true, that it really is that big of a change
that would help more than changing source code that almost nobody reads
@vapid bluff in the case of redis there is a large cascading effect
Since it means they have to deprecate the current API version and provide a rewritten one with the terms changed
Everyone using redis now has to deal with these changes
And we're solving a problem with these changes that I'm really not convinced actually exists
Here's the thing
If it was such a big deal, by now we would have some kind of organised movement
But it really actually just seems to be kind of a flash mob thing
Like you wake up one morning and there's a ticket with 300 comments discussing why you should be shot
You know what I'm saying?
was that the redis guy?
I think so
Say what you want but no credible group is in the business of intimidating its way to a better world
Best Argument Ever Against Political Correctness by Stephen Fry To support this channel for the thousands of hours dedicated to bringing you the content you ...
I was brought up to believe that bullies were a bad thing.
a lot of people have different ideas of what 'political correctness' really means.
Brb, washing up
some use it as a guise for toxic behaviour and then play the victim when called out
idk, i just think it's very easy to mischaracterize a genuine case of calling out something wrong as being too pc.
@worn kite soon we'll all push to the mistress branch instead too the consensus is that "master" by itself isn't offensive
I wonder if they'll start policing stuff like dom/sub
If not I'm totally using that the next time
:P
Just feels like a dumb change to spend a bunch of man hours on
@vapid bluff I don't think the movement has any credibility
If the big organisations that care about equality in tech were championing this then maybe I'd change my mind
But they are not
i can see the validity in that argument, in cases where it's a huge integral part of the program, as it apparently is in redis' case
Not even the UN cares, and they've already shown to be too far into this
Supporting toxic groups like CON and the ADL
but then i think, what if these were different, even more potentially offensive, outright hostile terms?
would the amount of work required to change the terms over still not be worth it?
will we have to stop touching files and killing processes?
But that's an inherently loaded and problematic concept
will we have to check how a command works by reading its woman-page?
It wouldn't ever actually make it into the codebase
im just thinking hypothetically
Master/slave has actual value as a software management concept because it accurately describes a form of process management
It doesn't have anything to do with actual slavery
You have to take it way out of context to get to that point
Because of that I really don't think the hypothetical is relevant
It's not inherently a loaded term
I feel like a true loaded term should never make it into any serious project's codebase
loaded by whose standards?
The vernacular
This whole master/slave thing is new
Most loaded terms were always loaded
it's really not
i remember a push to change the same thing about [PATA] hard drives, and some manufacturers did make the change before it ended up being made irrelevant by SATA
That's still way newer than original uses of the terms though
If you went out on the street and walked up to a person and went "Look at you, you fucking slave"
They would probably be.. Very confused
Whereas many other terms would just get you lynched
That's why I don't see it as a loaded term
There are terms all over than can be “offensive” if you jump through enough hoops. But they describe the situation perfectly. Just seems like such a wasted change
Yeah, and realistically it's possible to be offended by basically anything
That doesn't really make it justified
You aren't right just because you're annoyed
That's conversation 101 really
Should we stop talking about water because Hitler needed to drink it?
</rant>
I mean just look at all the racial slurs here that have normal uses in other fields. Stuff isn’t like, offensive until you direct it at a person / group offensively. Kind of weird to base a change off a perception of people being offended. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs
The following is a list of ethnic slurs (ethnophaulisms) that are, or have been, used as insinuations or allegations about members of a given ethnicity, or to refer to them in a derogatory (that is, critical or disrespectful), pejorative (disapproving or contemptuous), or oth...
Yeah, and realistically it's possible to be offended by basically anything i disagree with this. when someone genuinely feels offense at something it's not a choice. it's by being confronted with something they feel is not right. if your argument is that 'anyone can think anything is not right' and therefore 'everything can be considered right/wrong' then we might as well shed all morality and ethics aside since there's no standards we can agree on.
also, it's ironic how the people who claim other people are too easily offended get so upset at their perceived offense.
I don't really get offended by it, though
It's not offensive, it's just a waste of time
And people don't seem to care that these things have effects
as Fry said it, the things proposed there might even be right, but they're by far not effective and the costs greatly outweight the possible gain
thats your opinion
It's not like I get mad at people suggesting this stuff
and effective to what end? i still dont see anyone trying to cure the world of slavery by changing python's use of master/slave
I get mad at people that suggest this stuff, get shot down, and decide that it's then appropriate to start calling people fascists and ruining their lives
The moment you start doing that, you lose all credibility
If a project decides they want to make the change, that's on them, though, it's their project
The Python changes really don't affect anyone
So while I think they're a bit pointless, I.. Don't care
@vapid bluff feelings can be wildly unfounded or highly opinionated, most people would probably prefer some objective arguments before they have to scour through every line of their codebase due to one of their libraries being changed
imagine if 'random' was changed to 'probability' for accuracy reasons, do you think anyone would be mad?
The people that would be mad would know that the name would be more accurate, but the cost of changing it would be like knocking down an apartment building to replace the foundations, even if the building wasn't in danger of collapsing
sorry for digging up the argument again, I just don't think that a political argument is valued as much as a practicality argument
So long story short, I'm writing a lambda calculus reducer
no guarantees I'll know how to fix anything but I can take a look
(a b c d e f) should reduce to (((((a b) c) d) e) f)
My grammar does the exact opposite
oh huh
(a (b (c (d (e f)))))

@bleak lintel chromium uses parts of chrome.... no?
chromium is the open source base for Chrome, without the google additions
@rain spindle Google Chrome is built on top of Chromium
Yeah ok
developed and maintained by Google
fair enough
Chrome is by google, Chromium is backed by the Chromium Project
@rain spindle wait no, chrome is developed and maintained by google
What is Chromium browser? It is an open-source web browser developed and maintained by The Chromium Project.
so yeah basically google chrome is chromium with google spyware bundled in
Yay spyware
the new version of chrome actually ties your google login into your browser profile
clearing your cookies doesn't clear out the google cookies either

@slate quail I don't get the blockiness of that joke picture
@knotty summit blockiness?
his profile pciture in that is made of blocks, hodling a hammer
because they're four emojis that don't fit together perfectly
ah, didn't know that, neat
🎩

is that Qt Creator
No
Designer
it's Qt designer
:P
that's where you make your UI if you don't want to do it in code
I prefer to do it in code personally
Oh
but yeah place one of the layouts and then put your widgets in it
Does it turn it into code and then u can edit the code?
Is this like adobe muse kinda?
dunno, I'm not silly enough with my money to buy an adobe product
I was :/ (although was discounted to £16 a month)
It would’ve been an amazing deal if I actually used the creative cloud apps
@sullen thorn It produces a file that you can load into code and refences the objects in to assign actions to.
I use it to produce those files, and to practice layouts that I might write in code.
somewhere in the far right bar is "objectName" which you can reference to in your python code to handle the object, or add stuff to or whatever
Oh - ok

Uhhh
Do if u do multiprocessing.Process() on a function, will it return whatever the function returns?
Or does it just return None?
It returns the process
Oh yeah :/
Waiting for the results immediately to put as return value makes no sense
Yeah idk what I was thinking - gotta go look on stack how to do pipe thingy now :/
I don’t
:D
that's the only reason i know
same
Wym that’s the process?
well basically
in american basketball, your teams are seeded before the season starts
some basketball owner fucking KILLED his team
like basically dropped the whole season
the lowest seeds get the first pick of the players
