IDE is typically the way you edit your code. Like "Word" but with some bells and whistles to make programming easier, like how word has spell check to make writing easier
Integrated development environment. A bit of a nebulous concept, the general idea, to my mind, is that it's a code editor with fanciness attached to make code development easier. Often there are things which will also run your code.
Are you doing Java?
SQL?
python
THANK YOU ! mate
nw
FYI, questions are inconclusive if it’s not a loaded one. You ask questions so you can receive a conclusion
@fossil shadow #python-discussion message don't use windows 11 on that small amount of ram
then you're out of luck ¯_(ツ)_/¯
don't keep much stuff open in the background, use a lighter editor like vs code or a TUI editor
Useless
even with nothing open 90% of my memory is in use
One day i decided to check my memory without opening anything and i seen 90% of my memory being used
And idrk why
what actually happens if you use up all your RAM, though? surely you have some swap?
On a laptop?
sure, why not? if anything, laptops pretty much always have SSDs.
windows enables swap by default but if it's on an hdd then it's far worse
Also i think it just crash the computer. Found that out when messing around with love2d.
a laptop with 4gb of ram?
4gb ram. it surely has spinning rust to go with it
to be fair, I did have a laptop with 4gb of RAM and a 256GB ssd
Imagine if someone said laptops ssd's can be switched out
unfortunately that does exist with eMMC
anyway, one solution to your problem would be to move to a lightweight linux distro :p (windows 11 in particular is very weird to have on such old hardware)
mine has 2gb 💀
This has happened to me on Linux quite a lot. Everything stops and I have to hard restart with my power button
I'm not using linux
Istg i ain't touching that os
You may want to
VSCode is probably on the heavier side. Compared to sublimetext or vim/emacs
alternatively, debloat your windows I guess; might help.
How tho
the last one I remember using was actually Tron, but that's slightly old now, and probably not for win11
please tll me you're using linux with zram
Bro zram is a gift from god
nonnoo, even goddamn xface has issues running on it due to the cpu being so weak.
only win7 works
wtf
My 8gb swap goes crazy
I have VSCode open (on linux) with 1 Python file. If I add up the RAM used by all the code processes it's about 1.2GB 💀
lots of gb for a 4gb ram laptop
my crappy homeserver pretty much depends on zram
sucks that windows doesn't have it
Windows
winblows
seems about right (though this is 2 vscode windows with many tabs)
I'm talking about without vs code
Your ram
My ram
you weren't planning to use that, were you?
my laptop had 4GB RAM 128GB SSD but I swapped it for 16GB 1TB and runs perfectly fine for everything I use
mind you I also switched to linux which helps
battery life halves if I use windows
costs significantly less than a new laptop, the CPU is only dual core pentium gold but my issue was just having multiple applications open
Too many folks (that are adults) are blinded by what their parents advise them to do thinking they can never say anything wrong.
Never fear of being disagreeable
I fear of being agreeable
I fear of being
I am
Why cant we cloud seed these clouds to fuck off?
Its mid june and theres an unhealthy layer of cloudage blocking my sun rays
big fan
why not phrase it positively though. disagreeable has a negative connotation. you could say, "speak your mind" or something
I disagree that disagreeableness has a negative connotation. It’s bad to be a “Yes man”
.wa short disagreeable
not to your liking
Hm
Some people keep the same pay rate because their too agreeable
Dr. Peterson discusses how agreeable individuals navigate their world with compassion and politeness, while their disagreeable counterparts exude toughness, bluntness, and a competitive streak.
Watch the full video - https://youtu.be/G1eHJ9DdoEA?si=MinIwXjclXHFIcPZ
Dr. Peterson's extensive catalog is available now on DailyWire+: https://bit.ly...
disagreeing means not agreeing, it is negative
It is negative but where’s the negative connotation?
What about the cons
You cant evaluate the behaviour without looking at the cons
right there
Agreeing also means not disagreeing so is agreeing negative too?
I thought you were talking about double negatives earlier
Are you going to answer the question
agreeing is positive
not disagreeing is not not agreeing, and like you said, we should simplify
Why should there be a negative connotation in disagreeing?
move to africa, all year round sun
If your opinions often don't agree with others you'll be seen negatively whether you're right or wrong
Same way contrarian has a negative connotation
Disagreeing with people isnt whats important, sticking up for your opinions and not being exploited is
Making a habit out of disagreeing for the sake of it isnt healthy
Strange how you’re online when katj9 is offline. Hmmm
idek who that is
lmao
"if you disagree, you are against me. against me = bad"
strange how timezones work isn't it
they're in the US (afaik) and seeing how the last msg was 7am talking about sleep, west coast
would be early morning there right now
Change how Raph tried to change the topic when an thread is still going
Katj9 does the same thing
u got me, I'm Katj9's alt account
plus that topic was already here
people arent changing the topic just cause youre not getting 100% of the attention keezy
you can still talk about your own stuff
every time I come here he's talking about argument fallacies or some other adjacent topic
I just don't care lol
idek who this person they're talking about is, I've never seen them around here, I just replied to the first message I saw
its your own fault for not knowing any better tsk tsk
So should people not disagree with people’s arguments in debates because it’s bad?
in a debate, youre not trying to get the other side to agree with you
youre trying to get the judges/audience to agree with you
because agreement is positive
thats how you win debates
that's not what I said. I said it's a negative connotation
I didn’t say that you said it. It’s a question.
Let’s assume for a moment that there is a negative connotation. So what?
You'll be treated differently
it's a question about what I said. so I clarified
it means your message will be received differently
It’s a general question to seek understanding about your position
People might think youre a contrarian
Or that youre combative
They probably wont give you as many chances to explain yourself
Or the benefit of the doubt
Overall you'd probably have a hard time convincing people
harder* time
You might not care or you might have enough leverage to get your way anyway
Gotta weigh your options
For example, at work you cant afford to be disagreeable if you're fully, 100% replaceable
You can have your opinions and stick by them if the other side has something to lose with you going away
my position being what I said. glad we can agree on this
u guys really need to stop "arguing" with keezy
Yes you made your premise in being disagreeable has a negative connotation but you didn’t provide a concluding statement on your premise. Therefore, I asked you if disagreeing was bad in arguments in order to seek for that conclusion on why you’re saying disagreeableness has a negative connotation. Understand?
It'd be nice if keezy actually wanted to argue
Instead he just name drops fallacies, tries to trick people into saying things they dont mean and then sneaks away when they wont fall for it
inb4 >strawman fallacy
you are strawmanning my position
Nuh uh
Anyway since keezy doesnt wanna address my thoughts on why being disagreeable is risky i will just assume he concedes
Feels good to be a winner
the conclusion is that you should use a different term instead of "disagreeable". the discussion about disagreeing was just a side quest
LOL idek why u guys keep giving him attention
every time I'm here someone is arguing with him about some BS fallacy or whatever he got off of wikipedia
it seems like he just comes here while bored to try to spite someone into "discussing" argumentation "theory" with him
Its fun
Thats all i got for you
Not the best of reasons
All right. Cool
Please, Raph is 2000% not my alt. Slightly offended at even the thought
lmao
chat what did they mean by this
fair ig, if you want to waste ur time go ahead lol
true
valid
that jab was uncalled for 💀
mod abuse tbh
raph catching strays
It's not a slight at you lol, but that the communication styles are so different that it's absurd to think you're my alt
yeah there's a pretty clear age disparity
I'm at work too, but I try to use at least half of that time productively
Thats pretty generous of you
I see makes sense ig
but the "offended" part is what I was talking about lol
half? you're doing too much
I'm autistically into certain types of stuff
so I just read books/articles and stuff while doing nothing at work
yesterday I spent all my free time at work writing and reading about typst for example 🤣
So the synonyms for disagreeable have far worse negative connotations than disagreeable itself. Disagreeable is the least negative connotation as it can get
But its still negative
This is an XY problem
What are you trying to accomplish by being disagreeable
There are definitely far more positive words to use instead
irrelevant
consider "speak your mind"
also this isn't even the definition of "disagreeable" that you were using
Could also use strong-willed, resolute, adamant, steadfast, tenacious
All positive attributes
real
Your claim is that disagreeable has a negative connotation so therefore, there should be an alternative
Did I steelman your position correctly?
“Speak your mind” is rather vague
so is "disagreeable"
How are you able to differentiate whether one is an agreeable person vs one is a disagreeable person?
the advice is vague in general. it doesn't take into account the individual situation
It’s not about individual situation. It’s about the individual personality
huh?
How can you determine whether one is high on agreeableness vs low on agreeableness with “speak your mind”?
To assess one’s personality traits?
Have you heard of O.C.E.A.N?
of course
Okay so you know there’s a metric for one’s personality on agreeableness
sure. but it's the wrong metric for this case
I am talking universally
Not a specific situation
"this case" is this discussion
||contrarian||

Andrew Wilson is probably the best debater that I have ever seen
there's really no good way of asking this so I'm just gonna say it
are you autistic? or do you have OCD?
do you have any other interest besides debates?
Universally, what word would you use besides “speak your mind” and “disagreeable” and that doesn’t have a negative connotation or less of a negative connotation then “disagreeable”?
Absolutely. But they are actually unfit for the server
I would criticize that we have a limited number of interesting topics to talk about that doesn’t involve people getting so sensitive
My remedy for that is people need to learn how to become resilient and stop being shielded by a bubble to protect yourself from words that offends you
this is the offtopic channel, as long as it's not corn or piracy you're free to talk about it
not that corn
ik ik, let me have my joke
talk about Python then
something along the lines of self confidence
You weren’t here last year. Were you?
beta radiation
dude, there's a bunch of stuff you can talk about that doesn't violate our #code-of-conduct lol
You keep referring to the #code-of-conduct but all the “offenses” that I committed last year never infringed any violation of the code of conduct
Refer to this #ot0-psvm’s-eternal-disapproval message
The whole channel shifted topics by the superior because of this opinion?
I've been on and off here for a year or so
And that was one of those civilized discourses that I engaged in
Yet, someone had to feel “offended”
I never was even given the opportunity to explain my premise
we've already been past this, that comment was indeed a violation of our code of conduct, and we've already explained explained to you why that was. It also happened...a year ago, we can just leave it in the past at this point.
Code of conduct on which part?
if you've ever had a problem with an infraction, you're free to DM modmail for clarification, or to air any concerns.
You never told me which section in the code of conduct it violated in
You keep mentioning the entire manual but not the section in the manual
keezy, that comment u linked screams "red pill" content lmao
u even used the term "marketplace" for dating
Idk if it violates the coc and I honestly don't care, but I think that's the wrong way to go about it at all
just side tracking here for a brief moment
what happens if I have too many warnings? lol
frankly, it comes across as misogynistic, which was the issue we had with it - if you're looking for specific sections, see the following:
- Be kind and courteous to others
• Using welcoming and inclusive language
• Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
We don't need to specifically list "misogyny" under our code of conduct to infract for it. The code of conduct isn't an exhaustive list of everything you can or cannot do, but it outlines the kind of environment we want to foster here.
well, there's not really a threshold of like if you get X warnings, Y will happen, but previous warnings are considered in the issuance of future infractions (but like, how long apart they are and such can also be a factor).
I see, cause I've been here on and off (leaving sometimes) for a year or so and just got my first warning yesterday for sending a piracy website link here 🤣
You don’t know what the word “ misogyny” means.
We tend to review the historical context, signs of growth, willingness to listen, etc when evaluating things
Buddy let's not have this conversation. If you'd like to raise and issue open an modmail.
it means hating women, the same way misandry means hating men
lol, you're fine, it's not like we auto ban after a specific number of warnings
WTF
mods, can we ban this guy for having an incorrect opinion?
I'm from Nebraska. Careful there
corn 👍
Even when grilled and heated???
dude Robin this is an extremely bad take
mod saying they like corn, ban!!!
No way...
i dont care you are all wrong
Popped corn, corn meal, corn on the cob, korn, grilled corn, corn syrup, the corn palace's murals
Its as simple as putting butter on it robin
Robin you don't like popcorn?
i wouldn't say i don't LIKE it
but i don't have it that often either
its pretty mid
core maze, corn/maize
they should just give me a bucket of fries at the movie theatre tbh
I prefer milho
homemade popcorn 🥺
if you don't dunk it in butter it's probably a somewhat cut friendly snack
shen you prefer icing over the cake
And?
that's like the most invalid take I've ever heard
Icing is usually the worst part of the cake
what??
overly sweet icing is terrible
dude everything you say is wrong
that's like the most invalid take I've ever heard
ok, good icing is actually good
holy shit get some good takes
IKR
Because it’s sweet
if it's from an actual bakery then sure it's fine
have you tried making your own icing
that's the problem it's too sweet
you can control the sweetness that way
yeah I've made a cake before
no i mean the actual icing
yeah, I've done that too
bro baked
was that better
there's different kinds of icing
yeah, I don't typically make desserts too sweet
why not?
I don't like too sweet stuff
true
and grocery store cake icing is like the epitome of too sweet
true
savory >> sweet
bro wants the umami
I bet that icing is super sweet too
how about i ice your face
sweet fruits are good though, but not like the overly ripe ones
and definitely not bananas
average aboo L take
tf
aboo has beef with bananas
aboo L lmao
aboo has beef with good food
???
real
mods ban this guy tbh
banana hate is understandable
aboo, more like, boo
far more understandable than this corn nonsense
EXACTLY
no, it's heresy
eugh
you're not supposed to shove the banana down your throat
you agreed with my sweet takes??
outplayed
do you have beef with beef
no beef is good
ok that is fair
sweet and savory foods are good
but I feel like in general you'll prefer one or the other
hating banana is like hating water
it's the most common and generic fruit, it's as inoffensive a fruit taste as it can be
hating bananas feels like being a hipster, I'm sorry
it's genuinely a bad food
what about when its half brown
no, it's your tongue issue
I made baked oats with banana in it, it ruined the entire thing
aboo is a hipster confirmed??
kids these days fr
you mean when it starts getting very sweet?
I don't like it when it starts getting very sweet either
i only have good takes
yellow u mean? when they're green they're hard and bitter
another bad take from u
u're crazy
nah
bananas are berries
what the fuck
green bananas are bananas that aren't ripe yet
when the self foot is shot
who tf likes fruit that isn't ripe
aboo
I never said I liked it
aboo has bad food takes in general
I just hate it less than ripe bananas
name one bad food take of mine
I'm not a picky eater, it's just bananas I won't eat
literally the one we're discussing
u eat green bananas, that's enough for me
that's like eating raw seeds to me, ur opinion is invalid I'm sorry
bro
I don't eat bananas in general 😭
green bananas
well, not bright green, but somewhat green
IIRC, there are other food you dislike eating, but my memory is bad
regardless, bananas in any form are bad
aboo getting dogged on by the whole lobby
he has me
bananas are the one thing I'll outright refuse to eat
!otn a aboo's bad food takes
:ok_hand: Added aboo’s-bad-food-takes to the names list.
true
I like some foods less than others, but I won't not eat them
!otn a hsp's bad takes
:ok_hand: Added hsp’s-bad-takes to the names list.
wtf
"all of hsp's takes are bad takes" was getting a bit wordy
that one is valid
proof that mods are biased fr
betrayal
that's what happens when you side with people with bad takes
oh i didn't see this
I take back what I said
hsp you have a couple of good takes
like two
whats the other one
agreeing with me
Can we talk about the meaning of misogyny for a moment
this is a bad save
"women bad"
next question
Pretty much
I'm not keen on this as a conversation starter to be honest 😄
Why do we need to?
isn't it believing someone not in your group is inferior
my saves are all good
How many do I have?
I vehemently dislike how my comment last year was asserted to misogyny
No. That is a) an unproductive argument and b) your thrust of it into the discussion was used as a means to discredit the mod's explanation as to the terms of our code of conduct by moving the goal posts. This is not going to be entertained.

"what is the sexual harassment policy"

I'll leave that as an exercise to u
That’s a burden of proof fallacy
good
imagine if you refocused all this effort on learning fallacies into learning Python
you'd be a senior dev for sure
lmao
lmfao
Imagine if they refocused all this effort into doing their day job
Go tell your manager youre free keezy
Add tests and docs to your apps
Being a senior dev doesn’t get achieved by the amount of programming knowledge you acquire. It’s the years of professional experience that you must attain in getting that status
Not really
not all years are equal
not really
it's never that simple
I've seen "senior devs" not get through fizzbuzz
there can be people that have spent a lot of years, but never really progressed much
More like señor devs, their mind fading away
or have the same 1 year of xp 10 times 😩😩😩
there can also be people that progress very fast
like me
bait
I'm not going to talk about… your situation
ragebait post
señor dev 🌮 🤠
but anyway, as with most things, ✨ it depends ✨
like me 😌📈
idk
Keezy youre in a great position of being the only dev in a team
You should spend less time arguing with strangers online and more time learning as much as possible
Debating isn't gonna help you in life
there are pros and cons
Its highly conducive to progress
I think as a junior, it's only cons
progress sure. in the right way? not sure
It depends on them
it's impossible to know if it's good or not. you don't know what you don't know
that's a logical fallacy. when you're debating you have to actual construct a... 🤡
Its unrestricted, theres demand for work in all areas of the product
This is good
Experience in a startup is more valuable than generic gigantic corporation experience
it's different
I would argue that debating helps to articulate your thoughts and how to speak and communicate concisely
indeed. you also get that with your technical reading and writing courses
People misuse words to mischaracterize people’s position and you need to call them out for it
actually, you don't
debating about worthwhile things then not about fallacies lol
you literally get nowhere debating about debating
and yeah. pattern matching on logical fallacies is not debating. you're just trying to "gotcha" people
it's like a painter talking about painting but never actually painting anything
you're just running in circles
what's the opposite of progress?
There’s people who sue for defamation of character
degress? postgress?
you should probably never come to Kentucky, js for your own sake
So yes there’s situations where you need to call them out for it
stagnation
congress?
That's not the opposite
That's the middle
being able to state "laws" and "syndromes" on people's arguments online is fun tho ngl
but yeah it's not productive if you're just shouting fallacies every single day lol
I'm dumb. it's regress
congress being a plausible antonym to progress is kinda funny though
I suggested a topic but it got rejected by a superior
shit happens
wdym?
ok and?
So you can’t tell me that all I talk about is logical fallacies and not worthwhile things
lol
the assumption is that they need to be appropriate
what if there is no going back?
I also talked about the parent vs stranger’s advice but a superior hijacked the topic as well
what's your problem with superiors anyway. topics get changed all the time
and usually not by staff
They use their authoritative power to change the direction of conversations at the table…
isn't that what a moderator is suppose to do? lol
I honestly don't care what you do at work or not
also your superior rejecting your topic doesn't prove anything
but most of the time that doesn't happen
There is a chance, and I'm just spitballing here, that sometimes we use soft skills to guide the conversation away from topics which have a tenancy to result in warnings, mutes, and bans.
wait, you're actually like that irl? lol
you literally had that conversation here like yesterday?
I was trying to talk about something other than informal fallacies…
why not talk about Python
Python 👍🏼
@quasi blaze what's your favorite std lib module
or what have you built recently?
💀
It was an inane point to make anyway. To quote what I said back then
of course some advice coming from someone in particular doesn't make the advice suddenly more accurate, but that isn't really the point
someone who has known you all their life will likely be able to give you good advice, having given good advice in the past also grants a level of trust
debt 😩
u were still trying to debate people
u should learn to talk to people without turning it into a debate
you should try building equity, instead
😔
discussing python in ot? what is this?
i don't get a retirement thing at my work
build socialism 👍
me neither
yeah off topic for off topic, so it should go in off topic
occupational therapy?
huh don't you have a real job
ot can also stand for on-topic
can we get a !pydis command to direct people to the main channel?
true tbh
name things around your house that you can use for a toothpick if you run out of toothpicks lol
save algos and ds
here's the command for u #python-discussion
u're welcome
also deja vu, I swear I've had this exact exchange before
lol
there are gov schemes that necessitate employers to match contribution to a pension fund
but private employers don't "provide a retirement" per se
my fingers
too small.. i gotta cavity hole
fingers too small? try a fist
lol
yeah. the pension has kinda died in the US. nowadays employers help with contributions to a retirement account
I use post it notes
chat is this real
hm thats an idea.. i could probably roll up a small piece of paper
I have a stack on my desk. I think it's the only thing I use them for 😄
you just... stick them in your mouth?
Yeah like floss
tf
ok that's kinda weird
It works!
do you use the sticky side
Just to get like bits of food out
yeah, make a "shiv" out of paper
illegal in UK
what
Don't judge me
murica is weird
but I can't talk much cause even with our govt supplied retirement plan in a few decades no one will have a retirement at all 🤣
Its good if its under 2.5 inches
I don’t think it’s inane at all. There’s bias when people find their parent’s advice more preferable than a stranger’s advice.
Trust also doesn’t make an advice more credible. You prefer to take your parent’s medical advice if she’s not a medical doctor over a stranger’s medical advice who’s a doctor?
FYI, I'm not from America
Do you think mothers know best as well?
that totally worked lol thnx
bruh
what is bro saying
just dont use the non-folded edge of the paper or you paper-cut your gum
post it note shiv
but you were talking about the US right?
I was not
oh
I was
therefore bro thunk
i think that's an actual logic fallacy for once
yeah
"not being from the same country" fallacy
that's uhh. affirming the consequent

how is that for a logical fallacy, keezy
imagine using YouTube clips
none of us will have one don't worry 💀
assume you got a piece of advice from your parent, someone who knows you well
assume you got an advice from some randomly chosen person in the street, who doesn't know a thing about you
which would you bet on being the better advice?
speak for yourself 😌
real
we're all going to die in the resource wars
if I keep saving at the same rate, I will have over a million at retirement
if I don't die
iz for me 👉 👈 🥺
certainly not from govt
which I guess goes into the "if"
oh yeah, not from social security lmao. that's dying
something something prior probability
too many ifs
bayesed
prior probability suggests I'm based

2 was generous
what did you expect?
it was a coinflip
i wasnt expecting yall to be mean
(this is totally a better prior probability joke :)
😩
flew over all our heads
but is the paren closed
I would bet my parent will before the advice from both of them is given

right, of course no one will claim that some specific person will always give the correct advice, but for meaningful advice where you might not be able to evaluate the quality of the advice easily, trust and priors matter a ton
that's why I was saying the point being made is kinda inane
I don't think anyone seriously claims "mothers are always right" as some fundamental truth
.... no. That's illegal

tbf it is useful for debuggin ig
It proves ssh is setup correctly
yepppppppp
i tried to use vs code server over SSH (the remote host thing in the corner) but windows perms are a fuck
can i ssh into a windows machine?
I wonder if etymologies like “co” , “sub” and “re” are taught in English for English second language speakers because English was never taught like that for native English speakers in elementary
some teachers mention them in more advanced classes
Surely you can? If not natively there is surely some third party thing for that
but speaking from my own exp, most eng teachers never bother bec they were too incompetent
Hell worse case ssh into a wsl instance running in on a windows machine
the actually competent teachers just sent us Legal ™️ links to watch game of thrones
and we picked up english like that
i thought of that but its kinda a stinky solution

More like “dis” and “un”

it wasn't for me, had to learn those myself. those prefixes both look and mean similar things in portuguese so it wasnt that bad
you can count on english to not make any sense whatsoever
I really doubt you could find any fluent English speakers who don't know that "un" means not or "re" means again
even if you've never been taught that, I hear native speakers make up new words starting with "un" or "re" all the time
toaster didn't get the bread toasted enough? Gotta retoast it. Read some JSON out of a file and need to write it back? Gotta rejsonify it first
"unfuck" has been one of my favorite verbs since the first time I heard someone use it
"The AWS outage caused a bunch of different problems, and I've spent all day unfucking things"
it's weird, i don't even think about it
yeah, that's my point - there's a lot of prefixes and suffixes that you just internalize as you learn the language, even if you're never explicitly taught them
noun verbification is my favorite
I've heard that's not a common thing in other languages
English speakers will casually turn any word into any part of speech
on god
I only read the first half of this and was already reaching for my phone to see what had exploded before I read the context.
aws outage
imagine
the top five services I'd need to migrate were already in my head.
We have an AWS bot that tells us when things are not... thinging.
Which is wonderful, because it is also the most active member of our chat.
I had a team put in a request for work for something similar. They wanted to route all AWS outage updates to a PagerDuty service so their on-call could be aware of the state of things. I wrote it. It lasted 33 minutes in production.
I was cackling the whole time.
We have the same system. Occasionally you'll see an alert fire 8 times and the on-call person will just stare at Slack dismissing alerts for the next 15 minutes or whatever.
"Acknowledged by <blah>"
repeat ad nauseum.
One of my favorite parts about working with devs in my org is that I can see when someone pushes a fix that blows up prod, and then watch the chaos unfold in real time.
The only thing that I've laughed at harder than that with our PagerDuty setup (which I'm an admin of) was when the database teams ignored our advice.
us: "You want to allow the system to dedup and group your alerts"
them: "No, we need total awareness of all alerts. You don't understand."
I think it was just two days later a central control something went out. 600+ database hosts all screamed in panic. I'm told the on-call pager didn't stop for 40 minutes.

odd but they called me the next day asking about deduplication and alert grouping.
Yeah, what a coincidence. They must've went home, slept on it, and reconsidered in the morning.
Oh wait, there was that time that someone with access they didn't know they had created a custom alert on our metrics platform. They were looking for more than 1 message on a queue for more than 5 minutes for their tiny service which did like 1 message a week or something.
Yeah, they didn't scope the rule. I don't know the count of how many queues exist in our greater org but I do know they opened up roughly 1,500 incidents within three minuts.
First time I'd ever seen us get 429'ed at the enqueue endpoint for pagerduty.
Big companies are fun.
This reminds me of when one of our detectors went rogue and decided to just… flag every event on all 25M systems simultaneously.
Shockingly, the infrastructure did not take kindly to what might potentially be the largest self imposed DoS in history.
Oh, infosec related: I remember the time someone ran a password scanner against our Active Directory. Testing a tool out or something.
Didn't see the little checkbox for "dry-run". Locked tens of thousands of services accounts out for various reasons. Brought the entire company to a stand-still. Hilarious.
I feel bad when I respond to alerts like this.
“I have isolated all your domain controllers because some idiot ran the wrong command. Sorry.”
the AD service accounts of all our microservices were locked because of a new security rule that was implemented
that seems like a lot of big fuckups for big companies
hm, big business big fuck up
The largest self imposed DoS in the history of the company I work with was one email containing two high resolution pictures of a kitten found in an ally and needing a home. The exchange servers melted with the forward/reply traffic.
that made no sense ok
People keep bringing us on systems that are mid compromise, and it’s always enjoyable going “Ah. Well the problem seems to be that we are racing the ransomware to install our shit.”
The USAF got a fun lesson in out of office reply-alls at some point during my tenure.
LOL was that kitten cc'd to the entire company or something
or was it all people replying to the kitty
big companies fuck up all. the. time.
so do small companies. the small companies just die from them 🗿
Yes, they fired it off to "all company" and it just went down hill from there.
One oppsie message sent to the entire USAF. Auto reply triggers and sends to the entire USAF. This auto reply triggers more auto replies. Suddenly doom.
The exchange servers weren't using a cached reference to the body of the email (the images). It was two, ridiculously large, image files times 30 thousands times however many times people hit reply-all "Please send me more info" or "Please remove me from this mailing list"
be might funny if that was sci stuff too
objectively hilarious
True. Harder to bounce back at the smaller scales.
Oh yeah.
Rumor has it, emails are still flowing today from misconfigured mailing servers replying to their own auto-reply.
Some day I want to do netflow analysis at a colossal scale and see just how much traffic is inauthentic bs just bouncing around the electronic ether til the heat death of the universe
mercy killing random mail servers in the middle of nowhere
ey, there's that verbifying in action
there's a channel with a slack bot called "Septa Wepta" and "Happy Septa" that announces train status
septa wepta has a 😭 profile picture and reports when trains are late
also. i remember when the TAs and RAs at my school were on strike. someone sent an email using the undergrad mailing list 😩. and everyone kept replying to everyone with "how do i get off the list" 😩
Reminds me of my favorite outage. Watching Netflix while coding. Netflix stopped Netflix ing, and had some issues with ssh, so just went to bed on a Friday night. Turned out all of aws east 1 died a painful death that night. Took days to recover. Didnt trigger DR because systems were half available, so we spend 24 hours trying to bring servers up that would then fail a few hours later. Absolute chaos.
Before my time in technology. I vaguely remember this one though.
Heeelo!
Wassup "python with a cookie" ?
the good thing about pixel art is that you dont need to do it correctly to make it look halfway good
"correct art" is a bit of an oxymoron in the first place, don't you think?
How so?
because it expresses something, how can expression be correct or incorrect? it's basically an opinion
you could define correctness as how well the art conveys the idea that the artist wanted to convey
sometimes pointers/references are just so convenient
mem safe pointers in go are part of the reason i find that langauge so interesting, but the boringness of it and the type system make it so that i avoid using it as a side project language
here's one place i need it in ```py
with self.check_method_call("name") as was_called:
... # some code
there could be a better way other than returning the closure cell... =∧=
if was_called.cell_contents:
...
did you just assume a language?? o.o
anyways ```py
with self.check_method_call("name") as was_called:
... # some code
if ^was_called:
...
saves about... 1, 2, 3.. um.. 13 characters :>
and should be about 1.7x faster :D
(i'm bad at approximating)
not really. try doing something in Python without indirection
mush
frame working
its a real job ad i found on linkedin
"real"
bet itll be like some guy on #python-discussion not too long ago that applied and got an email for a shady "corporate vpn"
they probably want your contact info so they can send you ads lol
That's a real mush here
read the requirements again in Sean Connery's voice
Once a recruiter messaged me and called git a database
yesh mishter python dev, i exshpect you to know PyNum
Technically they said "[python frame] working knowledge"
Because "frameworking" doesn't make sense and there would be more obvious problems than numpy (numpy is pretty robust, so depending on definition of framework it could fit... Pycharm never)
I see this as "python ecosystem" + "practical (as in work practice, vs edu or personal projects) knowledge", just weird wording/translation
Is pyunit a thing of they saw pytest and unittest and made it into pyunit?
!pypi pyunit
Huh, does anyone actually use it?
Idk why bot didn't show release date, but this "pyunit" is from 2009 💀, only one release
On https://pyunit.sourceforge.net/ (linked as homepage) it says "Latest release: 1.4.1, 10th August 2001"
So the 2009 is just someone uploading it to pypi, but it's from 2001 💀
PyUnit is part of the Python 2.1 standard library
Huh?
🤔
smh i cannot SSH into my laptop from my phone
ssh keeps hanging
oh lmao
im having this problem on my termux session
What os is the laptop? Have you checked the ssh from another computer first or even same computer?
i look up the issue after running ssh on verbose logs -vvv and arch users are having the same issue
mint latest version
it works from my PC but my phone is having an arch user moment
not really anything for working, im just messing around to learn SSH
hmmmmm it might be a router issue, i added -o IPQoS=none to my command and got a different error
interesting
I had to afk but now I scrolled further:
Update: Unless you're stuck in the year 2000, PyUnit is in your Python standard library as module unittest.
So that company above is stuck in 2000
To the native English speakers that don’t have an English ancestry: Do you still feel connected to your ancestral background?
I remember seeing a project demo on youtube
It was about some robotics thing that someone made to track their cat across the room and stream it. it was a camera that could freely move around but was attached to the ceiling via some mechanism I don't quite remember
was the camera stationry but able to adjust the angle or was it like moving on a rail?
indoor upside down rails are so fucking based
unfourtunately the only application i only ever see ppl using them for is curtains
moving on rails i believe
wait acutally
it might have been one of these
for like movies sets
sounds perfect for that use case
fuck im trying to remember
i believe the thing the cam was attached to was an upscaled version of something used in 3d printers (not the traditional servo control or corexy, something different)
@lament cairn 40 characters is not too much, have you seen the german language? they have like 50 pronouns
ohmy fucking god my pc is becoming too slow for fucking youtube
no ill just swithc to another frontend
god i wish there was a lighter frontend that still had recommends and other shit
and not whatever invidious is
it mightve been pulleys and some other shit actually
less cool but still cool
rails on the ceiling has potential for the coolest robotics projects tbh
the thing i was talking about with the 3d printers is delta robots, this is probably too clunky to use for an entire room
like imagine glados but instead of adminiistering fart looking neurotoxin
she goes around
and sprays
uhhhh
air freshener
im just gonna start throwing random keywords at youtube and hope something shows up
yep its completely beyond me
okay fuck
u use a yt frontend right?
god damn it it was such a cool looking project with such a weird purpose
so i guess searching history wont work for u?
im using normal yt
oh

Anyone anyone?
why first gen immigrant?
Nope. I don't think about ancestry that much
At least first gen then
At least from the American standpoint, if your family has been here for generations, I don't get the fascination or obsession with heritage. I mean it's neat for sure, but some people wear it with pride which feels silly to me. "My great-great-great-grandfather came over here from [insert country here] and my nth-great-grandmother came from [insert other country here]. So I'm like 3.45% [insert country of ancestral origin]." Like... Cool
Oh took me a second to see why the bot added the reaction
I'm a native English speaker, and I was born in the U.S., but my parents immigrated here from India. I do feel like I'm fairly connected to my cultural background, I grew up speaking my mother tongue, and eating Indian food, watching Bollywood movies, etc. we'd also visit family in India every other year. It also helps that I'm surrounded with a very large community of south Asians where I live, and so a large number of my friends have the same background I do, and we'd frequently go to events and get togethers. A third of my school is probably south Asian, lol.
A thing parents did when I was younger was refuse to respond to me unless I talked to them in our mother tongue (Urdu), which forced me to learn the language.
Well that was wild
🤨

did you know about the hungarian assult on vladivostok?
💀
i only know about the nazi and h1tler
thats supposed to be point 💀
the joke is that vladivostok was on the other side of the of the nation, past siberia to which it was impossible for hungary to ever reach
vladivostok is near korea
hungary is south of Czechia
i just got smarter
fr
siberia is best for that
siberia is only 5,100,000 sq mi
a large amount of mineral resources, little to know colonization, yet
perfect for setting up a autocratic, militarist and warmongering state where the state is just a vessel for the military
true
so? i wouldnt trust anybody here with 1 sq mi
wait a minute..... isnt that just prussia? 💀 /j
no, they are just a extension of Macedon
which is just a extension of bulgaria
💀
so much extension
poor @distant iris got boykissered

i'm kinda confused too, what was the issue with the with setting up a colony in russia?
justified tbh

i need a new history teacher
seriously though, what was that warning for?
the cringe meme posting
.

they were relevent to the conversation
your conversation was also cringe
It still has to abide by our code of conduct
thats not something to be warned for, but i agree
who listen hamliton
its cringe to me, its worthy of a warning to the mods
WTF
i dont mean any hostility by this but which msg was against the code? the comment about prussia or the thing that lyra sent?
yea history
i agreed to the the fact that it was cringe 💀
Prussia was a German state located on most of the North European Plain, also occupying southern and eastern regions. It formed the German Empire when it united the German states in 1871.
Whatever the convo was after lyra's picture is very borderline
we can continue on our topic of creating a ||fascist|| colony in siberia then 💀 /j
ok
anyway, siberia is a bit too cold, some more global warming is needed at a faster rate
Literal hot take
quick! start more wildfires in australia !

and brazil
bro what about the kololas
and kangroos
they can live in the 2m sq cells we build for them near the ring of fire in the pacific
perfect temperature
atleast they live
not for long 💀
didnt you read where we would be building them?
☠️
.ringoffire
nah
The Ring of Fire (also known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Rim of Fire, the Girdle of Fire or the Circum-Pacific belt) is a tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes.
It is about 40,000 km (25,000 mi) long and up to about 500 km (310 mi) wide, and surrounds most of the Pacific Ocean.
The Ring of Fire contains between 750 and 915 active or do...
perfect place for a zoo
their screams will power monster .inc
yea send all the animals to to astrilla
Like...
Can we not talk about trying to set an entire country on fire and listening to the animals suffer?
I'm genuinely surprised I even have to say that
no i meant to save them
Gogi wasn't, however
☠️
The most expensive ring you know of
i would sell it off to our alien overlords
Fun fact, the overwhelming majority of koalas suffer from chlamydia
