Yes i guess so i didnt think about it like that
@lavish rover I know im a nobody in here and in the world of programming but wow! That Ray tracing thing you did is amazing. Im guessing its for Images. And that Glass Dragon looked amazing.
yep, it's a technique used to generate photo-realistic images
Those images looked Awesome. Really nice stuff.
thanks!
wish i could grasp that concept like that.
it's actually surprisingly approachable if you're comfortable with some basic math. Here's a website that walks you over how to make a very simple raytracer https://raytracing.github.io/books/RayTracingInOneWeekend.html
Thanks

It got to the point where I was double checking the serial numbers on other model laptops to make sure I wasn't going crazy.
It had last "checked in" like 45 days ago... Is it just hiding in a drawer or something?
Well, yesterday was the HR managers last day, so I went to look at both [manager and assistant] of their computers because they were still on on-premise AD and I wanted to move them to Azure.
Well, turns out I had actually given the assistant an Azure AD joined computer, that was now failing to sync for some reason

@rugged root know anything about racket/lisp in terms of difficulty to python?
It's not really a matter of more difficult
Imperative (Python) programming has a much different style compared to declarative (racket, lisp)
So it's a bit of a mental adjustment going between the two
But I think in general, imperative and object oriented programming does tend to be a bit easier to swallow
Watership Down.
what is object programming?
This turns up when I search "clang"
Object oriented programming. It's where, in your code, you're creating constructs, things, like building robots out of stuff. Behaviours, storage modules... But with code.
You take a blueprint, make things from said blueprint
I'm half asleep.
It was a good expalanation
It can be very modular. Mix and match.
I've thoroughly enjoyed every one of his movies I've seen.
You make a class which lays out the specification for things to create. You create objects of that class. So if you have a class Students you could then make a variety of students based off that class. They would have their own names, ages, favorite subjects, etc.
However they would all share the same fields (attributes) and functions (methods). You can then pass those objects to different sections of code and they have all of that data and functionality carried with them
To understand object oriented programming, first, you have to understand object oriented programming. Oh, no, wait, that's recursion.
People get too hung up on the object oriented label.
Your Name was good.
Kino’s Journey 2003 version will give you existential crisis
'Linux is only free if your time is worthless'
Why is this not working?
, instead if . - For these kinds of questions you're probably better off asking in #python-discussion or getting a help channel (see #❓|how-to-get-help for that)
Shoot
Can you explain real quick, what you do if you type "import math"
So math is a module within the Python Standard Library, a set of tools that come with the Python interpreter. When you run Python without any imports, it only loads certain things. This keeps from having a bunch of stuff loaded which can take up memory and wouldn't be needed in most cases anyway.
So this will load all the available tools at your disposal in the math module
ah so it enable things like .ceil?
Yep
Thanks

✅ @sterile grove can now stream until <t:1652289079:f>.
@hard wyvern #data-science-and-ml or #user-interfaces would know better than I
Ok thanks
can someone explain to me why it's not 0:2 for "MML" and 3:5 for "BS"?
@rugged root
It's about how the start and stop are determined
The start is inclusive, so it includes the index number, however the stop is exclusive, meaning it doesn't include that number
So for first_name, you're just getting the first 3 elements, MML, which are at 0, 1, 2 respectively
The same thing applies to range()
very quiet in the vc
why
guess im late
I want inclusive/inclusive
and why don't I writre 0:2 then? @rugged root
why dont you get a mouse? @vernal bridge
@vernal bridge you are 100% german right? 😂
So it starts at 0, and we include that because it's inclusive. We grab 0, 1, but then we get to 2
i never used a trackpad b4 oop
We know that our stop number is 2, and since stop is exclusive, we don't grab that
emhh I'm Overwhelmed rn
Lets look at it another way with range()
Let's say we want to get 1 through 6. What would you write to do that?
i have it in my laptop to
@vernal bridge vErY Go0d VeRy NiCe
0:7?
So range(0, 7)?
starting at 1, ending before 7
Ye, you can start from any number
range(start, stop, step)
The start is the number you want to start on
Stop is when you want to stop. When you hit that number, you're done
@vernal bridgewhat kinda keyboard do you have?
@rugged root ok...

@rugged root btw, i finally upgraded to windows 10
Took you long enough
Indeed yea
Indeed yea
Now i'll upgrade to Debian/Fedora/Ubuntu next
Best way to learn these things it to try them out so you get used to them
but whats the thing with counting from 0.... I don't really get that cause right now I feel that I', counting from 1 as usual
Now do Windows 11
ye
My laptop doesn't support it sadly
Python uses 0 indexing, so everything starts at 0
It makes a bit more sense when you think of range, for example
Google is adding auto TLDR to google docs.
which why i'd have to ditch windows prob for good
Google is adding auto TLDR to google docs and chat.
Like if you want 6 numbers, you just do range(6), because that starts from 0 and goes to 6.
Is the bypass for organizational accounts only?
I thought it worked for everyone
Microsoft too I think
However, if you have 1 indexing, you'd only get 5 numbers

@buoyant stirrupI think you'll find that homophobes have a short shelf life in this server. 🙂
am i being that
hi mates :)
You said that two guys kissing in front of an antigay protester ought to be "fucked up". Call me sensitive, but I'd call that pretty fucking offensive. 🙂
he didn't say that
"Sorry, when you said they should be fucked up, did you mean the antigay protester, or...?"
"No, the two guys kissing."
you missed the key point
that's it
if you didn't leave the chat people with better english would've explained that to you
i didn't mean what you got from my words, that's my poor english and you not willing to listen further
i know it's my fault you didn't get the key point
I'm not willing to put this down to a misunderstanding. I think you made your point quite clearly. 🙂
that was the point of @buoyant stirrup, i agree
I know this is python discord but does anyone know how to code in c++?
You might like to try searching for a Discord server named "The Coding Den".
Though anyone who does C++ would maybe have a better idea than I as to which server would be best suited. I did spot a dedicated-to-c++ server, but it didn't look quite as established.
So is that a no

I'm just a listen
Anybody familiar with database design?
A bit
Identity documents in the United States are typically the regional state-issued driver's license or identity card, while also the Social Security card (or just the Social Security number) and the United States Passport Card may serve as national identification. The United States passport itself also may serve as identification. There is, however...
@tough abyss What's got you hung up
I am trying to design a database for my personal app. So I want to know if the design is good enough.

Our fax is VOIP
Just a little box next to the printer that converts Ethernet to phone line for the printer
What do you have now?
Non-functional fax machines?
I know a little bit about using mikrotik
Also, the notion of dialup/fax reception/sending modems being expensive is flabbergasting.
I'll take a gander in a moment

can someone help me out with a little problem that i have with a py script?
What's your question
is bc I am like doing a script, which what basically does it takes a phrase. And it count the number of words that is repeated, and it tells me when I have a word that starts with no, to not let it in the counter
basically is something specific from the code
may I send it to u in private?
It'll be easier if you just toss it here
The more eyes on a problem, the easier it'll be solved
yeah ok
we have those philipines in Spain
pretty good chocolate donuts
word_string = "it rains in spain no nono no spain"
list_of_words = word_string.split()
if word[0:2].lower() ==# to get all the words that the first two characters start with no
count = {}
for word in list_of_words:
if word[0:2].lower() == "no":
else:
if word in count:
count[word] += 1
else:
count[word] = 1
print(count)
you also used to literally "have" the Philippines given that we're a former Spanish colony
yeah xd
we owned a lot of stuff
it was like you sell them to the united states or we are going to have problems, it happened with Cuba
Federated
Cuba was told to been sold and then spanish people were like no. And then United States just conquered it
@rugged root
this is the description about what i am doing
is from an old exam. I am trying to practice for one that I have in a few days
str.startswith(prefix[, start[, end]])```
Return `True` if string starts with the *prefix*, otherwise return `False`. *prefix* can also be a tuple of prefixes to look for. With optional *start*, test string beginning at that position. With optional *end*, stop comparing string at that position.
i dont really understand sorry i am kind of new here
No worries, I honestly just realized that you're already essentially doing this
Saves you from having to do the slice for it
So wait, you're just trying to find how to get the total count?
If that's the case then it should just be...
!e
my_dict = {'ham': 3, 'pork': 2, 'spam': 5}
print(sum(my_dict.values()))
-sighs- I can't brain today, I have the dumb
!e
my_dict = {'ham': 3, 'pork': 2, 'spam': 5}
print(sum(my_dict.values()))
@rugged root :white_check_mark: Your eval job has completed with return code 0.
10
no no
what I am trying to do, is
I am given a random phrase
Right
and the script need to count the are like repeated
