I mean, I'm just a Helper. So I don't exactly have the position that more powerful staff have.
I don't see how it jeopardises the server any more than images or links
But I feel like handing someone the ability to stream to 95,000+ other people when they aren't trusted is.. dangerous to say the least.
( Sec, need to copy/paste some configurations. )
you obviously don't allow all of them to stream right away
I just said you don't hand it to those 95,000+ other people
you give a role to them after they've been there for a month
Trolls generally don't have a month's patience
Ha, that's not the case in many instances I've seen it
All it takes is someone with multiple accounts and hanging out for a month
all the trolls I've seen so far left after a week
you can also make it 6 months
or make them have to have a conversation with the staff or helpers first
Something
Anything
also, how many people are gonna be in the vc at one time anyway?
I don't see the pros outweighing the cons tbh
Maybe that's because you can stream
But I feel like handing someone the ability to stream to 95,000+ other people when they aren't trusted is.. dangerous to say the least.
@whole bear dont feel that all 95000 people are going to be in a voice chat together
I am frustrated every single day that I cannot stream to show someone how to solve an issue
I mean, even if I couldn't, that has nothing to do with my position on this
it is literally the most annoying thing in this whole server
Well, it might mean that you have less experience of the frustration that goes with trying to explain something, knowing how to explain it to them, and not being able to explain it because you can't share your screen and actually show them what you are doing
and with me, im not a helper, im not a distinguished coder, but just a newbie. i'm wanting to screenshare my Mu Python code so that when i have errors people can run it through with me, help find whats wrong & learn.
@whole bear people policing other people to save the headache.
The community plays a big factor
lmao
Don't compare 4chan to Python server, xd
@whole bear I appreciate that you're looking out for every worst case scenario. I'd like to believe that all of the folks in the server are genuinely here for learning python.

Ou, merit system
Helpers should have a higher say.

You see, I like that kind of question
lmao
But I don't like questions about specific libraries (that I don't know)
'How do you write an array'
how do I make a gif in a tkinter window
lol
I think staff should just come clean on 'We don't know, lol'
I think a lot of people end up here when they're just looking for some direction
Like they don't even know the words to google
Aye
We can just have a channel for that specific topic. If anyone knows about that specific topic, maybe that person is kind enough to answer that question. If anyone questions the staff, all we can do is hope that one of the staff members know, lol.
We also sometimes have the XY problem

here
if im not mistaken ur code counts how many digits are in nums right
yes
yep
yes
!docs str.split
str.split(sep=None, maxsplit=-1)```
Return a list of the words in the string, using *sep* as the delimiter string. If *maxsplit* is given, at most *maxsplit* splits are done (thus, the list will have at most `maxsplit+1` elements). If *maxsplit* is not specified or `-1`, then there is no limit on the number of splits (all possible splits are made).
If *sep* is given, consecutive delimiters are not grouped together and are deemed to delimit empty strings (for example, `'1,,2'.split(',')` returns `['1', '', '2']`). The *sep* argument may consist of multiple characters (for example, `'1<>2<>3'.split('<>')` returns `['1', '2', '3']`). Splitting an empty string with a specified separator returns `['']`.
For example:... [read more](https://docs.python.org/3/library/stdtypes.html#str.split)

@gentle flint thanks for asking
can you make me a website @gentle flint
no
lol
use wix
😦
straight to the point
but thanks for asking
boi
@idle crater please elaborate
Iterating over range(len(...)) is a common approach to accessing each item in an ordered collection.
for i in range(len(my_list)):
do_something(my_list[i])
The pythonic syntax is much simpler, and is guaranteed to produce elements in the same order:
for item in my_list:
do_something(item)
Python has other solutions for cases when the index itself might be needed. To get the element at the same index from two or more lists, use zip. To get both the index and the element at that index, use enumerate.
ill send u what i would right num2word as
wix should be fine
@idle crater
just use it
ye one sec

Hey @subtle orchid @frosty garnet
Just talking to people in the help channels.
Sounds louder now.
Alright, you'll get better signal-to-noise if it's closer.
Ow my ears.
Nah the other guy.
Indeed is pretty good.
I got a job in like a day on indeed.
Where are you based @subtle orchid?
👍
LinkedIn seems to have basically turned into Facebook
Indeed is just a job listing site.
What would you recommend for someone who is a reasonably good programmer, but has like no professional experience to prove it? @frosty garnet
Oh yeah, I'm self-conscious so I don't talk on mic 😅

more ideas for showing your prowess without professional experience

They've taken counter-measures.
I reckon the guys at Facebook know what they're doing.
If they don't want you to scrape, you're not going to scrape.
Also, the people you work with.
Your work life will be so much nicer if you have decent and competent colleagues.
Usually the catch is high stress or long work hours.
the thing i like about freelancing is it is boundary less u can have jobs what poeple in developed countries have even better while leaving in a developing country
"Do you want to be my technical cofounder?" @frosty garnet
Been here like 2 weeks. It's been alright.
This server gets a lot of random trolls.
Probably because it's on the home page.
There are like 20,000 server members online now.
wow
That's kindof crazy
I can remember when the internet was still like a niche thing.
I remember dial-up lol
You couldn't use the internet and your house phone at the same time.
haha pretty much
I just feel awkward talking into the mic
I also don't like talking on the phone.
Nah, I'm ok in person
I don't know... 😅

Hello Scriptkiddies
npm install it
Use MacOS
😄
Linux is cool, but you end up spending all your free time configuring it.
Apparently even Linus Torvalds said he doesn't use some linux distros because he doesn't know how to install them.
And even when they are really configurable, you can never get them to work quite the way you want.
There's always some small, but annoying, compromise.
ya i've almost given up
Ah, same!
I mostly use it to mess around and learn linux
Without worrying about deleting all my files or something.
I've been using Ubuntu as my "work" OS for a few years now. No surprises and really stable.
I was a distro hopper before that, but... I now want something that always just works
I usually use server Ubuntu and ssh into it.
hey @olive sentinel
Hello!
I only use Ubuntu at home, but I sometimes have to work on Windows.
Ubuntu with the i3 window manager
i love your explantions which u gave us on summer code jam
on the youtube!
Ubuntu with the i3 window manager
@olive sentinel ohh nice
Oh, thank! We'll probably do something like that again in the future.
nice!
and when will be the pygame event starting?
idk how to create games with python, but want to participate in it
It's not a PyGame event, you can use any python game framework you like
It's also not actually an event we organize; we're partnered with PyWeek and provide it a community home here
PyWeek is far older than this community
The first edition was in 2005
Yo
😅
Erm
about to start a new project
Learning Lisp
I've always been told I should read SICP, so I'm doing that.
I'm looking forward to 'metalinguistic abstraction'
and the 'metacircular evaluator'
Yeah, I've heard that even though it's an old language, it still has a lot to teach about computing in general
Also, my favorite programmer are lispers
People like Peter Norvig
Yeah, he had a book...
paradigms of artificial intelligence
His github is inspiring
I learned Haskell at university 😅
They started us out with it
Want to implement a computer algebra system? bam: https://github.com/norvig/pytudes/blob/master/ipynb/Differentiation.ipynb
oh yeah
This one is cool: https://github.com/norvig/pytudes/blob/master/ipynb/Economics.ipynb
He does an economics simulation
I'm surprised simulation isn't applied more often in economics.
Oh, interesting.
I think they mostly use analytical methods.
Every field has its own way of doing things.
Which parts of Python are you learning at the moment?
Like, what are you currently learning?
Oh cool.
What was the application domain? @olive sentinel
Nice
There's a really range of abilities here.
It can be a challenge.
What's the roadmap for future development of the server?
Yeah this one.
I'm here @autumn plover
Yeah whatever
It's worse if you feel guilty about it
Embrace being a night-owl
What's the roadmap for future development of the server?
@stuck furnace
We have a roadmap for this year, but it contains mainly back-end stuff for now
Could you have some kind of 'careers fair' event?
(With vetted companies.)
What do you do for work now?
I'm just here because I need to feel useful 😅
I'm currently doing a few freelance jobs, which are fun, but not something I can do for the rest of my life I think
I'd like to do that, but always find a big code-base intimidating. Any tips on this?
Everyone wants that 'arctic code vault' badge on github.

I only know about this because I'm British. Most of my friend's parents at school were from either India or Pakistan.
Sorry, I have to drop out. Phone call and some moderation stuff.
You know where I'd love to visit: Iran
i would aswell
It's supposed to be a really interesting country, with a lot of culture.
I visited Nainital in Uttarakhand Pradesh
So have you worked on any big projects? @frosty garnet
Damn, I'm 28 too
1992!
A great year
Oh right
I was going to ask, do you have any tips for joining in on a big code base?
I get super intimidated
When I just see a big repo full of files
Look at the issues they have; find something relatively simple you can tackle
It could be just a documentation change/fix
Just something to get you started and may get you in touch with the maintainers/core group behind the project
If it's a smaller project, just hop on
It's like, where's main()?
Ah, yeah
Alright, thanks for the advice
Alright, gtg
It was nice talking with you @frosty garnet @subtle orchid

hello
i need help
im a beginner in python btw
what is the use of .pop()
.pop()
pop() is an inbuilt function in Python that removes and returns last value from the list or the given index value. Parameter : index (optional) - The value at index is popped out and removed. If the index is not given, then the last element is popped out and removed
You are adding students to a Poetry class, the size of which is capped at 6. While the length of the students_in_poetry list is less than 6, use .pop() to take a student off the all_students list and add it to the students_in_poetry list.
