if you want to do web development and don't know if you want to do frontend or backend or both then for programming / scripting language javascript is going to be the best thing as it works just as well for both frontend and backend

if you want to make a really simple website you can start with just html, css and if you need to be able to interact with things on the website like draggable things or showing / hiding things or clicking buttons to sign in or something you can use javascript for that
this is all front end
but that is for 1 page when you have multiple pages you need a server program which allows you to control which html page or whatever other data you send the user's browser for what route for example https://google.com/ with route / sends google home page but https://google.com/images with route /images which sends you to the google images page
that is back end as its code which decides what to send to the user but the user cannot see it running
of course there is more to it but that's the basics
