Hi everyone! 👋 I'm a final-year student from Spain majoring in Chinese/English. I’m working on my thesis about the Linguistic Landscape of Chinatowns (specifically San Francisco, London, and Vancouver).

I'm researching the tension between the traditional Cantonese identity of these neighborhoods vs. the rise of Simplified Mandarin and English gentrification. Basically, looking at shop signs to see if the "Old Chinatown" is resisting or disappearing.

I’m looking to chat with 2nd or 3rd gen Cantonese speakers living in (or familiar with) SF, London, or Vancouver.

Do you feel the signs in your Chinatown don't represent the community anymore?

Do you see more "tourist trap" English signs or Simplified Chinese replacing Traditional ones?

If you have 5 minutes to share your thoughts or vent about how the neighborhood is changing, I’d love to hear from you! DM me or reply here. 🥟🥢
