I would say get some practice books that are designed for children and try to do it bit by bit every day. The more you write the more words you will remember. At least it's how I learned the characters when I was a kid.

Hi! I started with pinyin as well, then took community college courses. All my professors use the Integrated Chinese textbook series from Cheng & Tsui Publishers, and you can choose the simplified or traditional book. I suggest getting the textbook first, then if you like it maybe add the workbook and character writing practice book to enrich your learning.
