Current level?
Currently level? Do you mean like the HSK thingy or something.
doesn't have to be HSK, it could be like are you comfortable speaking about basic topics using basic vocab
can you understand TV shows, etc etc
I don’t think I’m able to understand tv shows, and to say about my level of Chinese… I think beginner is appropriate, I know a little bit Chinese like the greetings and stuff. (Like introduction) but I’m not really comfortable about speaking yet, I don’t think I’m ready yet since my Chinese vocabulary is very limited. Plus I’m worried if I’ve accidentally mispronounced it, especially with the 4 tones.
Yeah, I have classes with my teacher. Since young I’ve been attending Chinese classes, but I didn’t really… understand it, but now when I’m older it’s more harder to learn Chinese since I’m falling behind from the rest of the class. I don’t really wanna fail my mother tongue..
i find total immersion really useful. apart from learning with my teacher i usually try to practice a little bit outside of class with something relaxing like Duolingo. I also have Tandem, which is a conversation app, to talk to Chinese speakers.
sometimes I'll read Chinese novel that's been translated to my mother tongue and try to reverse translate some sentences into Chinese, or look up some words in Chinese
basically if I can, everything I do I'll try to sprinkle a touch of Chinese into it lol
sometimes my friend and I would also go out to have Chinese food and I'd try my hands at ordering lmao
That's a bit like what I did before, I translated the website my school uses for learning resources to Chinese a bit lol
I didn't do much of my work in Chinese though just read some things here and there and switched back to English
I think immersion would be helpful, like what @hasty rampart said, try doing anything in Chinese, like searching things online, on YouTube, change your discord language to Chinese, even your phone or PC, though maybe you want to wait to become a bit more advanced first for that
I think searching Chinese videos on YouTube and reading Chinese webpages would help a lot. It's important to keep listening to the language and slowly get more used to it. Get used to the feel, the flow, the rhythm of the language. You'll learn more vocab and remember them like that, through immersion
Though there's something important before you even start doing all this: Do you have interest in the language? Do you have motivation to learn and improve?
You can also study Chinese song lyrics, or even sing them. For me I'm studying Korean and I tried singing a fast song, was challenging but I enjoyed it
It's important that you have interest and motivation... if not you will feel like you're being forced to learn the language and you'll have a hard time. That was what happened to me last time in school, I didn't have much interest and struggled a lot in Chinese
Yes! And no matter which activities you choose to do while learning, make sure it’s an activity that you enjoy! I had a lot of fun subbing videos for my favorite idol. Improving my Chinese while looking at my idol. It’s a win-win situation for me cause it doesn’t feel like actual studying lol 🤣
