叫 has many meanings, but in that context of “taking about names or simply call something”, 叫 literally means “name; call”. Some examples are like “我叫明 my name is Ming”, “你叫什么名字 what’s your name”, “那个东西叫什么 how to call that stuff” and so forth.

It might help to think of it as "I am called Ming". Sometimes sentences can be passive in Mandarin without needing a grammatical change to the sentence.
