The idea is that rather than having air connections only to neighboring cities, there would be 2-3 different “tiers” of connections based on distance
-
Local. Only needs small plane, so can be connected to all airports, but has low demand.
-
Domestic. Needs medium sized planes, so can’t be connected to airfields. Has increased demand, but requires more planes and terminals. Airports can also act as connections, which gives some extra money from people coming through.
-
International. Requires large airplanes, and needs an international airport, and has massive demand. Also perhaps places it connects to generate with names from other places, like names based on China, Japan, Africa, India, Latin America, or others.
I’d also like to see more connections. With land connections it’s reasonable to imagine these neighbors could be locations on route to large places, but with air travel it feels less believable. I understand it getting a bit messy, so maybe a connection mode separate from land and sea connections would be necessary
I think this would make air travel more interesting and make your city feel more connected. I think this would also work well with more airport extensions like extra runways/terminals.
