The real big game changer for Moreton County and the world over. The way people lived their lives, the decisions they made, the people they knew , the work they did, the places they went, it was all affected by Artificial Intelligence (AI). This was intelligence of computers created by man, that then had the ability to create and expand on it's own intelligence; whether that was in favour of the progress of the human race, or some other kind of 'greater good' was a controversial topic in the county; hence we had groups like Humans First (more on that later).

AI was used in so much; industry, healthcare, fire and rescue, law enforcement, defence, education, transport, wildlife management, city services, government decisions and well, so much more without going into detail. Basically, observe something that happened in the county, and there was likely AI involved.

AI and the Eco-system

As part of the Green Space Initiative a lot of work had been done using AI to improve the green spaces and ecology of Moreton County. We saw this in particular with the Forest project that came about in the late 2020s, an AI-controlled ecosystem in a tower block where people, animals and plants lived side by side in an almost entirely self-sustaining environment at little cost to the planet. AI had also been used to decide and control energy and water in the county, making decisions about who needed water and power, and where best to get it from without damaging the environment.

Droids

One of the most visible aspects of AI in Moreton County were the (an)droids. While machines existed in all walks of life, such as self-driving cars in people's driveway or production assembly lines at their workplaces, these were are an 'All-In-One' human-like robot. They had identifies. They could be spoken to and respond with creative thoughts, they were useful to help people make decisions and aid them in their everyday life. They 'walked' the streets helping people, but they could also run-downtown to pickup a TV from a friend. Their human-like interface made them easier to interact with in day to day life - as opposed to purpose-made robots. They even spoke about giving them citizenship.

Delivery Drones

Another AI-controlled machine you would see on the streets were delivery drones / bots. These were purpose-built unmanned vehicles that helped move things around town for people. Most factories or businesses owned a delivery drone that they could stick an item in and get it sent out to their customer. Many residents had them for themselves to send items to friends or family. The AI in them helped to determine the best possible route based on distance, traffic, conditions...etc. and would also adjust their speed accordingly. How-ever unlike Droids, they couldn't handle their items in the best way possible. A droid could pick up the item out of the box, and decide what best to do with it for their human (such as cooking food in time for them getting home). Many businesses had droids load the delivery drones for them.

Self-Driving Vehicles

Delivery drones were completely unmanned and had no persons within. Whereas 'self-driving vehicles' was the term typically used to refer to automobiles that had space for humans within, yet drove themselves using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to determine the best routes, speed, and interaction with other objects on the road. Humans could intervene in the driving process if they wished to, for example if they wanted to take the scenic route. Some Self-Driving Vehicles, like the G1 Dolphin pictured here next to an ADV delivery drone, were entirely shrouded in tinted windows to give the humans within privacy while also seeing the world around them.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Another type of drone were those that flew; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). The military had been using them since the 1950s for intelligence gathering, air to air combat and air to ground assaults. Sometime in the early 21st century civilians started using them for news gathering, art, deliveries and upsetting Air Traffic Controllers. At first they were remotely controlled by humans but then they became mostly driven by Artificial Intelligence. It was a requirement for most drones operating in crowded airspace to be AI driven, choosing a route that avoided collisions with other aircraft or buildings. Most UAVs were small and didn't carry much cargo, but could get places very quickly, giving them a quick turn-around. Pictured is an advertisement UAV.

Pet Droids

The goodest of droids! These were programmed for the best in sentient intelligence. They were all about feelings and comfort, and would do anything to make their human feel happy. They were ideal for those who were allergic or didn't have much time/money for organic pets as they didn't require feeding, drink or shelter. They knew when to charge themselves too. Good bot! 🐕 * mechanical barking noises *

Security Drones

Police, law enforcement agencies and military all used drones. We'll cover the military side of things in another post. On a day to day basis civilians could see Oblivion Drones operating security patrols. These AI-lead drones were quite clever at identifying criminal activity, gathering evidence, and could report this back to the responsible agency. They were armed in case they needed to quickly intervene in a volatile situation or use less-than-lethal solutions. They could also emit warning sounds and public announcements.

Public Transport

AI had massively changed public transport. Remember when bus and train drivers would aimlessly follow the same route, day in, day out? When AI was introduced into public transport it did the job enthusiastically, meeting timetables exactly without fuss or delay. The route was pre-determined and could be followed by machine, identifying any issues with the route such as protests blocking streets, and adjusting accordingly. We'll have a section on transport in more detail on a future post.

Water and Power

We briefly mentioned this before. Not much had changed in 50 years in terms of power and water sources in the county, but the AI technology involved had. The entire power grid and the water network was controlled by an intelligent system that could respond to spikes and lulls in demand, diverting resources as necessary and activating different power sources in response. The AI could detect and isolate faults without blacking out or shutting down the network, dispatching emergency services and technician crews if necessary. The AI did everything it can to ensure that power it received was from green sources as best as possible while also trying not to decrease output. In terms of water, the AI made sure that dirty water went to be sanitized. The AI would check the water regularly for contaminants before allowing it to re-enter the system as fresh.

Education

There were a huge variety of schools, libraries and information sources out there for those of all ages.

Kids still went to school but their method of education was a lot different. The AI identified the different learning styles and potential abilities in kids, creating a profile. The profile was weighed up with what was needed by society for decades to come - choosing the right kind of education for the child to put them on the right path for life. Throughout the child's education the AI constantly adjusted to potential opportunities for the child and weighed it up with what it knew of the child's progress so far. In order to present the child with a friendly interface, the AI's education was given through the form of a physical android that could interact and be sentient. The droid learned how to handle the human children throughout their education and altered it's own droid personality to suit. But, it didn't always go as planned. Some had accused the AI of being altered for the gains of the corporate leaders by educating children to work for their needs.

Aside from a child's education, learning tools provided education to those of many walks of life. The AI was constantly fact-checking information in the real world as it changed and determined the best way to output it across the internet. People could access this information on a personal basis at home, or through carefully designed courses, such as those provided by the University of Belmont's AI.

Summary

Artificial Intelligence (AI) was everywhere. Everything anyone did everyday usually involved input from AI and the extent of that was how much people could pay to make it work for them. It was helping people get enough sleep, determining how long it took people to get from bed to school, work or social events. It arranged transport for people. It was factoring in what food or clothes were best for people and their body type, and how to obtain it while also considering their financial situation. It was there wherever people were to help overcome the problems people presented it. It was studying people to best adapt it's personality to suit their needs for them to have the best possible life, and it may also have determined people were a threat to the existence of society or even the survival of the planet, and considered how best to terminate people and their unsuspecting co-conspirers, before they even thought of doing anything.

Aha we had the same idea. I'm waiting for mods on CSII and then I want to make a futurustic San Francisco-inspired city! I already made a city called 'Fran Sancisco'.
