I wonder why normal suburban shops handle petrochemicals, and why food processors exhaust smokes...

Yup industry should be divided between polluting and non polluting. Maybe even Light and heavy polluting.

As far as petrochemicals go, they don't really break down to all the groups of consumer products. They have plastics but they don't have any of the other items. Some major petrochemical items that are sold in regular stores are cosmetic items such as makeup, perfume, aftershave, shampoo, hair dyes and some hair wax. Other items you may find the the stores are crayons, markers, carpets and food dye. the fact that these stores sell petrochemicals may be an attempt to emulate this, or it could just be an error.
