They can but if they attack while they damaged, they are destroyed. Like No.1 Commando

So I just checked the encyclopedia in-game and apparently ambush will deal damage first

#

Means that its effect makes a guarantee ambush kill as long as 771st can deal damage to that attacking unit (infantry,tank,etc)
