The Jagdverband 44 (JV 44) Squadron was an unusual squadron. It was primarily equipped with ME 262s, but also had an assortment of FW 190 Ds too. These FW 190s were part of the "Platzschutzstaffel," a unit designed to protect the jet fighters near airfields. While the ME 262 normally was the fastest fighter plane in the air, it had a hard time getting up to those speeds, making it extremely vulnerable during landing and take off. P-51 fighter sweep missions were destroying these jets before they were able to get into the air and complete their interception of bomber formations. Thus the still capable FW 190s were given the role of protecting ME 262s from fighter sweeps and hang around the airfields they were being fielded from.
These FW 190s were painted with red and white striped bellies to distinguish them from the American fighters that were attacking the airfields. AAA gunners were not able to reliably tell the difference between the long nose FW 190s and the P-51s, resulting in friendly fire incidents. The red and white stripes were adopted to remedy this, sticking out even at far away distances as to be recognizable to the gunners. These paint jobs are very striking though, and I've always wanted to make a card about the unusual fighters.
