Japanese bulletins had several terms when referring to soldiers lost in battle such as senbotsu (killed in action), tai-atari (body crashing or ramming ones vessel into the enemy) and jibaku (self destruction while also hurting the enemy, such as a wounded soldier using a grenade when enemies came near). Gyokusai is to die gallantly as a jewel shatters meaning that no matter how dire the situation it is better to be killed than surrender.
