From 1938 onwards, the tradition was formed where imperial subjects were expected to observe a moment of silence at 10:30 AM two days each year, once in April and again in October. On these days, extraordinary ceremonies for the war dead were carried out at Yasukuni Shrine in the presence of the emperor and it is during these where the emperor and his subjects simultaneously bowed their heads in honor of the war heroes (eirei).
