Hello

I am a 21-year-old tenor who is at University who previously did amateur Musical Theatre for a little while when I was younger. Like many students, I've stumbled into singing with a band, and we have a gig on the 30th of April.

I am trying to improve my voice, and to the best as I can, I try to do my vocal training. As I don't have the funds for a vocal coach (I have had coaching through musical theatre and had a few 1:1 sessions in my youth).

I primarily sing Pop Punk/Emo, and I'm a huge Panic! At the Disco fan (probably through my love of the genre and theatre), so I use Brendon Urie as a bit of a vocal north star. So my set list for the gig is the following:

Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued - Fall Out Boy
Letterbomb - Green Day
Time to Dance - Panic! At The Disco
What I Got - Sublime
Nobody Does It Better - Carly Simon (Radiohead Cover)

Now I am aware I need to work on my mix as that is the keystone for Pop Punk, so that's more or less what I am trying to achieve with vocal training, increase range, resonance through chord closure/compression and improve my mix/passagio and headvoice/falscetto.

This is the playlist I try and follow daily to improve my voice but if there is anything better I could be doing:

This me at an Open Mic singing My Own Worst Enemy - Lit (which I think was a flop and didn't do me any favours):

Hey mate — first off, you’ve already got a solid foundation. A lot of singers never get to the stage of understanding concepts like mix, passaggio, closure, resonance etc., so you’re ahead of many already.

From everything you shared, my honest take is this: don’t obsess over unlocking some advanced technique before the 30th. Right now your focus should be consistency, stamina, and efficient coordination so you can deliver the full set confidently.

For your style, the biggest wins usually come from:

• Not dragging heavy chest voice too high
• Building a reliable mix through the bridge/passaggio
• Keeping vowels balanced on higher notes
• Using intensity without throat tension
• Managing energy so song 5 sounds as good as song 1

Brendon Urie is a great reference stylistically, but use him more for performance, phrasing, and confidence than trying to copy the instrument itself.

Daily until the gig:

  1. 5 mins lip trills / sirens / straw work
  2. 5–10 mins scales through the bridge on “gee”, “mum”, or “nay”
  3. Practice hard phrases at 70% volume
  4. Save full belts for rehearsals/live use

Most important:

Live audiences care more about conviction, timing, pitch center, and presence than perfect technique.

You’ve got good awareness already, which is half the battle. If you’d like a deeper breakdown on your voice type, passaggio, mix training, or specific feedback on your recordings, feel free to DM me and I’ll be happy to help more directly.
