I do recommend taking vocal lessons. I'm starting vocal lessons as well. You should of course learn and practice by yourself but there are things you will never get unless you get a vocal coach. Kind of like playing the piano. You can learn without a teacher but having one will make the path a lot smoother, you will learn not to have bad habits or break them (instead of realizing 5 years after that you have many bad habits and then it's a pain to get rid of h them). You also get someone that has a lot of experience and can guide you in how to improve. Every person and voice is different, so having someone physically look at you singing and getting familiar with your voice and your goals is a huge help.
Basically, you don't need one but your musical path will be a lot more efficient with one.
