You shouldn't be running out, there's 256 total texture slots now (the same as the number of blocks), I believe that change is also pushed to retail as well but I might be wrong about that

Are you using the new or old menu? The old menu doesn't support the 256 textures
If the "Stairs2", "HalfBlock2", etc. blocks don't exist, you're in a version where the texture limit was removed.
If they do still exist, then I guess that hasn't been pushed yet.
