There is an edge, at least on the top side. Easiest way (with no time limit) to see it is to use grappling hook+Special Powder to get to the top of the Drop Pod chute, power attack to mine a small ledge and call a resupply there.
Then go up the supply pod chute and you're out.
Another way is to ride the minehead up after pressing the button on PE

There is, but it can be pretty far. Most reliable way to get out is going up the drop pod shaft and using a resupply up there to go further.
