When crafting a spear its starting durability is also determined by your carpentry skill; the spears you craft can start with like 50% durability if your carpentry is shit
Also I am a fan of running foraging on spear builds just to make it easier to find the materials needed to build one

I think the being in the same relative city is nice and helps with rp and such, the only thing that is making things difficult right now in the game is the zombies which are hard to take on in the cold, and just surviving in the cold
