Whenever I try to group up the parts needed for the head Z rotation deformer I keep getting an error message (message is on the picture attached to this post)

Its because youre not selecting the parents. When doing this you will want to look at the deformer panel, not the part panel. Here is a well written explanation of parent child relation: #1109567678739398787 message
