Monarch Stormforth and Soul Crossing, how does this work with Graydle Alligator(And does it matter if it's face up or not)?

forgot it was destroyed by spell effect and not sent to GY by spell effect, so that's a my bad.
That being said would it still be the same if it was sent to GY by a spell effect?

if alligator said something like "Sent to GY by battle or spell effect" would tribute by stormforth count as a spell effect sending it to GY?(I know soul crossing ignores the whole unaffected thing so....)
