I come from a World of Warcraft background so this post will be heavily influenced by WoW.

WoW pvp has 2 ways of match making

  1. Character level , which is essentially Battleship level.
    In WoW its 10-19, 20-29 etc.
  2. Personal rating (arena teams/later battleground team rating), many games use that, for example you can start at 1500 often and then you drop or you go higher.

Now there's clearly a bracket for BS1, BS2, BS3 and BS4 but when you hit BS5 its chaos, its all BS up to 8.

What I would suggest is separating ranked matches in brackets. BS1 vs BS1, BS2 vs BS2 only etc. If you want BS7 and BS8 together due to amount of population being low at that level, that's fair I think.

Each BS level bracket should have a different reward.

For example:
1st place in BS1-3 bracket get 50 crystals, 2-10 gets 20 crystals, 11-100 gets 10 crystals, 101-200 gets 5 crystals or whatever.
BS4 equivalent could be 100 > 40 > 20 > 10
BS5 200 > 80 > 40 > 20
BS6 400 > 160 >80 > 40
BS7 800 > 320 > 160 > 80
BS8 1600 > 640 > 320 > 160

That's an example.

That would fix BS 2-3 level being played by players with level 500+ with OP mods against other low players, or at least less twinking as we called it in WoW.

Second thing, don't reward based on "crystals earned" reward on personal rating.

The starting rating could be 1500, you are 3rd place, you stay at 1500 or move towards 1500.

Second place, you gets rating that can push you above 1500 or closer to 1500 but not higher than lets say 2250 (kind of like Red Star clearing, there is a cap) 1st place can push you up to 3000.

4th place will move you toward 750 and 5th place 0.

What's the incentive for high level players to play in separate brackets? They will face same level enemies because its a higher bracket? they probably prefer to farm lower players? The crystal rewards are as I explained higher at higher level BS bracket, kind of like the blue star daily currency reward is adjusted with higher BS level.

You could later add if population increase sub brackets within BS brackets where players at 1500-1800 rating will face each other , 1800-2000 vs that same rating etc. like divisions but that's more complicated and I am aware it would increase the queue to find a match.

You could also make blue stars be teams of 2v2 or 3v3 which would demand coordination from players in team but I dont think that could work unless the BS is level 5 or higher as it requires more experience with the game from players and to be in a corp to find players for it.

That could also have players make "Blue Star teams" , kind of like Arena teams in World of Warcraft.

And one more thing, most bad reviews/reasons why players quit the game is clearly blue star issue so addressing this issue could likely increase the game population.

Oh and there would need be minimum amount of played ranked games per month to be able to perceive a reward, say 84 games per season for example (if the season is 30 days) could be 90 if you want too. And it can stay 3 ranked per day
