Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
I'd say that they wouldn't just say bof, because they'll give out a reason of why they feel that way. So I'd talk about that. "Ça va" in France is less more about the small talk than in the US and more about how you really feel
