"est-ce que" is a stamp-in construction you can use to make sure your sentence does come up as a question, also come up as a bit more informal. It can be very useful when you don't want to sound too informal but still not use the overly formal inversion.
Note that the word order can change:
"Tu fais quoi ?" vs "Qu'est-ce que tu fais ?" for instance
