Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Because à indicates that there will be what we call a "complement circonstentiel" that will follow: basically a group of word that give information about the circumstances and environ indicates that you don't precisely know the distance but you dont have to put it at this place. For example "à trois kilometre d'ici environ" would be valid.

You're describing the location. Without it, it sounds like the place IS the kilometers or something

What about in other circumstances? Is it the same thing where it's used to describe location? What about "en"?

I mean there are hundreds of different use cases for each preposition, I know lawlessfrench has a pretty extensive list but it's hard to give a full response, you'll get the hang of it with practice and looking into specific cases that you don't understand
