Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

French as a language doesn't facilitate non binary appellations
with my non binary friends, I just ask whether they'd prefer me to refer to them using masculine or feminine pronouns and had no issues so far
You could say "directeur·ice" but that is very connoted for now
That would be if you were specifically trying to not use a gender at all for the person, and it's mostly used only in LGBT/educational circles for now
