Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Is this the best way to use this?
I've read some people build their own deck but I don't know.
anki
hi @shadow marsh are u up?
I know how anki works, I use it quite a lot myself
Heya Flynn, sorry I was trying out different apps and just finished my Kwiziq test
do you have an anki deck?
I just used the top French one which was https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/893324022
iirc the top one is quite intricate and can cause you to be a bit lost
Maybe something smaller like https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1040931494? Only 70 compared to 5000 which might be more focused
70 is nothing
I curated a version of that 5k deck to make it easier for learners
tell me when you have it setup on your app
It seems to be the same size as the 5000 one.
it is the same deck, just without all the fluff
I thought all that could lose people a bit
now, at first, go to settings
change the settings to around 100 words per day
that's a ton, but because you don't have anything to review, and most of the starting words will be things you're already familiar with, it'll be fine
you'll quickly need to shift it down over the next few days tho, as the app will ask you to review previous words in addition to new ones
I only changed new cards/day and max reviews/day.
yupyup
realistically you won't do over 200~250 reviews/day top
100 new cards a day isn't sustainable, but as I said it's just to get started
also you won't necessarily finish the whole deck, you might very well stop before and go on your own
So with this deck, the words get gradually harder. Anki picks random cards for me, making cards I often answer correct less likely to pop up? Is this how it works?
can you screenshot the first card?
okay so here is the part you should try and remember what the word means
when you do, you should click "show answer"
but this deck being a beginner deck, there will be many words you already are familiar with and don't need to review at all. In such cases, click on "more" > "bury card". This way it won't ever come up again
once you show the answer, you'll be met with several options.
most importantly "again" and "good"
click good if you guessed/remembered correctly what the word meant
click again if you didn't
if you failed (clicked again), it will ask you that word again later in that same session
even if you succeed, if it's a new word from this very day, it will show it to you again for you to get it a second time so it sticks
then, anki will schedule when to show you that word again, based on how well you did. Usually, at first, it will show it to you the next day. If you succeed, a couple days later. If you succeed again, about 10 days later, etc, spacing it more and more. And if you fail, it will set it back to regular reviews
Ohhh that's what those numbers mean at the top of hard/good/etc
yes
on new cards it's basically always either 10min (later this session) or one day (if you get it right)
my cards sometimes show 3 years
now the "hard" and "easy" buttons are... not very recommended
they're basically used to space it closer or further from the regular "good" interval. "again" and "good" should be your main buttons. If you really know a word well, you don't need "easy" and might as well bury the card. I guess you can use "hard" if you remembered the word but are really unsure and want a review not too far off
Merci beaucoup, neat system, I'll keep playing with it over the next week and see how it goes.
I've been playing around with different ways to grind grammar since I don't know what works best for me yet.
Yeah I've just been marking everything easy so far
as I said, feel free to bury the cards so anki never shows them again. You'll see many starting words at the beginning of the deck you should already be very familiar with and don't need to review them
that's also why I told you to start doing 100 cards, you should already be familiar with starting words
just remember to set that number down on future days
