If the word only exists in plural form (or is plural most of the time), it's partitive plural.

Des archives, des cendres, des décombres, des rillettes, des ténèbres, des vivres…

If the word is able to be counted, it's indefinite plural.

Des pommes, des voitures, des hommes, des oiseaux...
