Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
cela is quite formal, but isn't wrong per se
you could use either "il" or "ça", with a slight preference for "ça"
"ça coûtait 1 dollar"
"il" is preferably used when the noun it's referring to has been used just before that (you can still use "ça", it's just that "il" could be confusing otherwise)
example:
"tu viens, ce week-end ?"
"non, ça coûte trop cher." ("il" is lacking a noun to refer to)
"tu viens au festival, ce week-end ?"
1 - "non, il coûte trop cher" (the festival specifically is costly)
2 - "non, ça coûte trop cher" (a bit more blurry, could mean the same, could also mean that "going to the festival" is the costly action, including both entrance cost and travel cost for instance)
