The usual way is the present tense

French has a lot of singular tenses that translate to 2-3 or more different structures in english

You just said simple and composé, those are opposites

You're talking about the simple past and yes it's only really used in books

The passé composé (compound past) is the common one

#

Tenses really don't correspond 1 to 1 ever between English and French
