Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
depuis is for continous events that started in the past and are still taking place.
It is followed either by a timestamp, or a duration
ex: j'habite en France depuis 3 ans (I've been living in France for 3 years)
ex: j'habite en France depuis 2022 (I've been living in France since 2022)
pendant is for continous events that last for a fixed amount of time, regardless of when they start or end, and does not continue past that point. Whether or not it is still happening at present doesn't matter, but is usually not used in such cases because you don't know how much time it will take overall. It is followed by a duration.
ex: j'ai habité en France pendant 3 ans (I lived in France for 3 years)
ex: j'irai habiter en France pendant 3 ans (I'll be living in France for 3 years)
il y a is not for continous events, but for one-time events that happened some time ago. It is followed by a duration, which is how much time ago it was.
ex: j'ai déménagé en France il y a 3 ans (I moved to France 3 years ago)
