Yes. It's ultimately a question of memorization; there's no real rhyme or reason to it, although there are some tricks (that have their exceptions). Notably, the vast majority of words ending in -sion/-tion are feminine (most notable exception being le bastion)

as citrons said, there are some patterns, but those patterns are just tendencies, not rules. The actual rule is on a case by case basis

when learning nouns, you should be learning its gender as well
don't learn "book = livre" but rather "a book = un livre"
