"s'appeller" doesn't mean to call oneself. It just means to be named.
You might have learned that the reflexive pronoun indicates an action done to oneself. This isn't exactly true. Reflexive verbs can have several meanings
Acting on oneself (se laver => to clean oneself)
Reciprocal action (se disputer => to argue / have an argument)
Something else entirely (s'attaquer => to tackle)
Can only be pronominal (s'enfuir => to run away)
"s'appeler" is moreso in the "something else" category and not in the "acting on oneself" category
You'd use il or elle for an object too
