"air" can't be translated as "breath" (would be "souffle") or "sound" in this way
"to look like" is specifically "avoir l'air de" which is not this construction, that said "un air" does work for "a look/appearance/aspect" which is one of the possible meanings
oh maybe "tune of the mermaid", that may be what you meant by "sound"
there isn't one single way to read it even in French
