"au" is the mandatory contraction of à + le
"aux" is the mandatory contraction of à + les
à + la doesn't have a contraction
so
les enfants vont à + le lit => les enfants vont au lit
ils vont à + la boulangerie => ils vont à la boulangerie

similarly,
de + le => du
de + les => des
ex:
j'ai besoin du camion (camion is masculine)
j'ai besoin de la voiture (voiture is feminine)
