When the preposition is complex as in it’s a fixed expression (près de, au bord de, à côté de), we use lequel to preserve the fixed expression

That’s because the relative pronoun « dont » ‘swallows’ the preposition « de »

When there is a preposition (simple or complex), you normally associate it with qui (for people) or lequel (for the rest).
De on its own just happens to be an outlier since we don't use de qui/duquel but dont instead. That said, you can still see de qui/duquel in literature but that's not the normal use. Naturally you don't use dont in complex prepositions since de won't be on its own there.
