Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"En revanche" is used to balance something bad with something advantageous.
For example : "Il n'est pas très beau, en revanche il est intelligent."
"Par contre" signify opposition. To oppose something bad with something good like "En revanche", or the contrary.
For example : "Il n'est pas très beau, par contre il est intelligent", but you could also say "Il est intelligent, par contre il n'est pas très beau"
I would definitely use them interchangeably
