Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
number-st/end/th
9e est théoriquement la forme "correcte" et la plus courante mais en vérité les deux sont tout aussi compréhensibles donc ça a peu d'importance
le seul numéro sur lequel faire attention c'est 1er/1ère vu que le mot est premier/première et pas "premième"
Oh ouah c'est beaucoup plus simple que l'anglais. Juste 1er, alors 2e/3e/4e/etc
Merci
Merci, c'est très utile.
Sorry, side question:
I tried saying "that is very useful" and incorrectly started typing "qu'est très utile" thinking I'm writing a contracted "that is very useful / que est très utile".
Is "que" just for questions ("what...") as well as for bridging two... uh... phrases? Ie. "comment est-ce que tu vas" => literal "how is it what you're doing?"
Or, maybe prehrasing... "qu'est" at the beginning of non-question sentences is nonsensical? I cannot say "that is very useful"... only "it is very useful"
first of, "that" has multiple meanings in English and gets translated differently
"that thing" is different from "that is useful" which is different from "the one that is useful"
the first one is an adjective (highlighting something) => cette chose
the second one is a noun (usable independantly) => __c'__est pratique
the third one is a conjunction (bridging) => celui qui est pratique
while translating dircetly can be useful, if you don't make the distinction between meanings, it'll end up pranking you in the end. this is a slow process, but eventually, you'll be able to grasp language syntax directly in French by identifying tools you need to make your sentence
Merci, I'm coping these into my notes
Yeah I'm working on weaning myself off of "write an english sentence but with french words".
-# note: constructions like "que c'est utile" exist but it's a different topic (closer to "how useful that is")
