If we were talking about the book, there would've been some clarification (le livre, il me dit qqch) or some change in pronouns (celui-là / ça me dit qqch)
But what sold me was the next utterance: « Je crois qu'on m'a déjà parlé de lui ». If we were talking about the book, I would've expected « … qu'on m'en a déjà parlé »
