So yep, étais allé(e) is correct because it marks the accomplishment of the action that happened before telling your parents.

@mighty ledge Thank you so much. Forgive me for my ignorance, but I'm certainly struggling. In the conversation that I'm trying to summarize, I am discussing an event today that took place yesterday. So, realistically, everything I'm discussing that happened yesterday should be conjugated in plus-que-parfait, right?
