Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
They’re different things
vieillir (verb) = to grow old
vieux (adjective) = old
mieux (adverb) = better
meilleur (adjective) = better
C’est mieux de partir = It’s better to leave
(What is better? The act of leaving)
J’ai une meilleure idée = I have a better idea
(What is better? The idea)
well, incidentally it seems like OP is onto something... at least to some extent
a number of verbs that end in -ir happen to have a transformative value to them
in particular this works with most colors and color related terms:
- bleuir → to make blue
- rougir → to make red / to blush
- verdir → to make green
- pâlir → to go pale
it also works for newness/oldness
- vieillir → to make/go old
- rajeunir → to rejuvenate
and lots of other verbs where it's basically to make / to become + adjective
- durcir → to make hard
- rafraîchir → to make fresh / to refresh
- mincir → to make/become skinny
- adoucir → to make softer
- salir → to make dirty
doesn't work with mieux, however
abonnir exists
but I feel like améliorer is way more common
