« vivre » is closer to 'to experience' whereas « habiter » is closer to 'to reside (in a place)'

so when you say « je vis à Montreal », I'm imagining you not only living there but also being active there like you spend most of your life or your days in Montreal

for « j'habite à Montreal » it's just a simple statement of you staying there
perhaps you also spend most of your time there but it can also mean you only living there but you work and do your daily stuff at, say, Ottawa next door
