they can be used more or less interchangeably
"donc" is a bit closer to "therefore", it shows a more strict cause and effect, logical reasoning, etc - it will be heavily favoured in stuff like math (but can still be used casually without issue)
"alors" is a bit more open-ended and can have more uses, in some cases less formal. It can indicate a sequence of events, comparison, or a cause and effect, similar to "donc", among others I'm probably forgetting
