"dont" can mean "y compris", but the reverse is not always true.
they can both mean "including"
ex: Il y avait 5 personnes dans mon groupe dont/y compris 2 Américains.
 There were five people in my group, including two Americans.

but "dont" as a relative pronoun owns a separate meaning
ex: Y a-t-il un élève dont un parent est médecin ?
Is there a student whose parent is a doctor?
