fwiw you don't just need natives to answer this sort of question, a lot of members of the server who are not native would be perfectly capable of answering this for you

but "je prends un café" is not wrong per se, but it's probably not how I'd say it
"un café, s'il vous plaît" is probably how I'd place my order most of the time and maybe "je prendrai un café, s'il vous plaît"
