"contrôle" and "examen" are both tests
they're mostly used as synonyms but present a small difference if you wanna be pedantic
"contrôle" is about checking the level of someone who's supposed to know or be doing something. It's used a lot in schools for instance, and is also the term for routine checks
"examen" is something you pass in order to check your abilities and get access to something else
